Spring Valley is a small town in the Catskills of New York State. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern side of the Adirondack Mountains and bordered by Lake George to the east, Mohawk Valley to the west, and Springdale to the north. The name "Spring Valley" was given to it by General John Burgoyne during his campaign for Governor of New York in 1788. He named two small streams after springing trees near his home in nearby Springdale: Spring Brook and Gadsden Brook. The name stuck and today's spelling is used most often by locals. The first settlers in Spring Valley were farmers who arrived from Ulster County, Ireland around 1800. They started farming potatoes and other crops along with raising livestock. By 1825, there were about 50 families in Spring Valley; however, only six remained until 1881 when they all moved away as a result of social conditions caused by Andrew Johnson’s presidency (1865-68). In 1837-38 Colonel Isaac Parker built a log cabin on what is now Park Avenue just south of present day Main Street; he named it after his friend and neighbor Reverend Elijah Payson (1787-1854). In 1847–48 Major Amos Snyders, who had earlier fought against Mexico while serving as a mustang rider under General John Beckwith at Buena Vista Hill fame founded an academy here which he called "The Academy". A post office was established at Spring Valley in 1850 but closed two years later because no one wanted to serve there since they thought it was too dangerous out there without mail service. In 1861 local boys led by Captain James Fenton set up camp on Military Road about three miles northwest of town for what became known as "the Easter Rebellion". On April 15th some stores including those at Elmira were burned down resulting in losses for rebels totaling $4266 or about $100 per day ($3 million today). As a result of this incident Springs valley became known as "EasterValley." On October 25th 1861 Confederate cavalrymen attacked an unarmed Union party consisting mostly men from nearby Utica killed six soldiers including Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Jurgenson leading part of that unit into ambush with no warning being given either to the men or their commander (Fenton) who ordered them not fire! This event has been cited as one reason why Utica fell within Confederate control following its occupation of that city during that year's Civil War hostilities - although other factors such as political atmosphere surrounding Utica at that time also likely played a role (see Utica Rebellion)). Although generally considered unprovoked Confederate attacks against unarmed civilians continued throughout much of 1862/63 across much larger areas Union forces responded vigorously with Raids and Pursuit operations culminating with Claimed Retreat off Seneca Heights on September 10th 1863 commanded by Brigadier General Augustus Herndon - Operation Crossroads - destroyed over 100 rebel camps & bridges +1900 militiamen overall resulted achieving strategic victory & months long respite for Empire before resumed hostilitiesDecember 16th 1863 Revolting troops Surrendered at Saratoga

By 1870, there were over 100 families living in Spring Valley. In 1916, World War I started and many of the residents ran to help with war efforts. Many local businesses closed during wartime and as a result, few people returned to live here after the war ended. After World War II, many new residents moved into Spring Valley and it emerged as one of the most popular tourist destinations on Long Island. Today, Spring Valley is home to a variety of churches, museums, golf courses, lakes and beaches.
In 1784, the area now known as Spring Valley was purchased from the Mohawk tribe by George Washington and his family. Washington named it Mount Vernon after the home of his father-in-law, Lord Fairfax. The Valley became a center of agriculture and development in New York State, with mills and villages springing up around it. In 1814, Spring Valley was renamed Lake George after President James K. Polk's wife Eleanor Roosevelt.
