The village of Spring Valley was located in the town of Goshen, New York. It was named for the spring that used to flow through the village. The first settler in Spring Valley was John Stephenson, who arrived in 1783. The community developed slowly until 1810, when a group of farmers purchased land and started to build homes. In 1814, the community voted to become a Village and on January 1st of that year it became a part of Newtonville. In 1828, the population of Spring Valley reached 100 people and by 1830 it had grown to 300 people. On December 3rd, 1860, during the American Civil War, Union forces attacked Confederate forces at Battle of Springfield Ridge near Spring Valley. The battle resulted in over 150 casualties for both sides and many buildings were destroyed or damaged. After the war ended, many residents left Spring Valley due to poor economic conditions. By 1870 only 5 residents remained inSpring Valley with an average population size of just 10 people per year. In 1915, as World War I began, much interest centered around nearby Castlereagh Air Base because it would be open to United States military use if needed during wartime. However no action ever occurred from this location because Castlereagh Air Base was eventually closed down due to financial problems during World War II which led to its closure completely in 1945-46).
