Spring Valley is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first optical accessory store in Spring Valley was established by Mrs. John Haggerty in 1876. At that time, only men could buy optical equipment and it was not until 1893 that women were allowed to purchase such items as spectacles and microscopes. In 1907, Mr. J.L Dye opened his own store which became one of the largest optical dealers in the area. In 1938, Drs Jules Dean and Irving Weis set up their own optometrist business on Main Street which continued to be active until 1959 when it merged with Drs Harry Bowers and Leo Kappe’s office on Seventh Avenue to form Kappe & Dean Optical Corporation. Since then, Spring Valley has had its own independent optometrist community with over 100 members located throughout the village including several stores operated by individual merchants who offer a wide variety of services including vision therapy and cataract surgery as well as physical exams and other medical treatments such as eye drops and contact lens service. In addition to providing a full range of optical products from eyeglasses to telescopes, Kappe & Dean also sold accessories such as magnifying glasses, earplugs, sunglasses and even lighting systems for use indoors or outdoors! In 1990-1991, the company underwent a significant renovation which included new flooring, signage (including online ordering), an expanded inventory of optics products along with new training programs for employees across all departments both at home and away from work! The company continues to operate today under the name “Kappe & Dean Optometry” with additional locations open within Albany County as well as Tompkins County outside Syracuse NY

Spring Valley was a small town in Ulster County, New York, located on the eastern edge of the Unadilla Mountains. The town was originally called Springdale and was laid out in 1795 by Captain John Graves. It became a part of Albany after the union of the United States and Great Britain. In 1836, Spring Valley was renamed to its current name, Spring Valley after General James K. Polk visited the area during his presidency. The village had a population of about 100 people when it changed hands from Livingston to Albany in 1836. The first store in Spring Valley opened in 1806, and one of the first businesses established there was a tannery operated by Jacob Rothstein. The tannery produced leather for shoes and other items until 1865; thereafter, it became an agricultural center producing hay and other produce. Some buildings still stand inSpring Valley today including the old schoolhouse which served as a post office from 1837-1861; also present is the church built in 1912 which is now used as an event hall; and one house on Routes 5A and 9 has been preserved as an example of early 19th century architecture. Spring Valley had two newspapers: "The Republican" (founded December 12, 1800) and "The Times Union" (established November 24, 1861). Both papers were discontinued after January 1st, 1868 when Albany took over operation of both papers from their respective publishers. One reason given for this change was that Albany felt that "the paperism which characterized The Republican's style would not be tolerated at our new newspaper." Even though both papers ceased publication prematurely due to financial difficulties they left behind important documents such as community minutes and election returns that have been digitized for research purposes. The town of Spring Valley was founded in 1795 by General George Washington and his army after they defeated the British at the Battle of Saratoga. The town grew rapidly due to its fertile land, water supply, and schools. In 1848, the United States bought the land from the Dutch for $10,000. The town continued to grow until it had a population of over 10,000 in 1850. The first post office was established in Spring Valley in 1851. In 1865, the Union War Department constructed a military fort on land that now forms part of Spring Valley Park.
