Spring Valley was a small town in the Whitman County, New York region until the early 1800s. The village was located on the north side of the Mohawk River, about two miles northeast of present-day Spring Valley. The first permanent settlers in Spring Valley were three families from Connecticut who arrived around 1785. The firstyear there had only six residents. In 1808, Samuel Hickey bought 2,000 acres (810 ha) of land south of Spring Valley from John Sassaman and began to build a home for himself and his family. Hickey's farmstead became one of the most important in Spring Valley because it grew corn, hay, oats and other crops for local markets. In 1824 John Purdy acquired 1 acre (0.40 ha) of land southeast of Spring Valley from Samuel Hickey; this area would become known as Purdy's Hill." In 1830, when Lewis Cass married Rachel Willard at White Sands Church in Auburn Hills, Michigan she brought with her many items taken with her on her travels including paintings and furniture which were stored at Greenvile Manor near Syracuse after her death in 1840." Her husband purchased 2 more acres (10 ha) adjoining Purdy's Hill soon after their marriage., This property became known as Cass' Hill after him." In 1834 James Murchison leased 500 acres (20 ha) northwest ofSpring VALley from Hiram Bingham; this area became known asMurchison's Farm."" Murchison operated a sawmill there until 1861."" In 1850 Nettie Atherton married Andrew Weldon near Deerfield on Long Island; they moved to SpringValley where Nettie ran a millinery business until their deaths in 1904." From here they took over managementof their Aunt Anna’s Hotel which still stands today" . Mrs Weldon donated most if not allofthe hotel’s furnishings along with some Concept art such as “Three Sisters” by Edward Hopper during World War II" .
