Many local landmarks such as the Old Dutch Church have been preserved or renovated over time and continue to be popular tourist destinations today; among them are Castle Hill Farmstead with its 16 beautiful Early American log cabin homes (now part of The Nature Conservancy), White Sands Battlefield State Park with its cannons still point out from where Indian War fought took place more than 350 years ago - making it one of only a few sites left unchanged since then, and also Fordham University which has had facilities here since 1836 AD when John Paulding founded what would become Fordham University hereabouts

Spring Valley is a small town in New York State located on the border of Ulster and Nassau Counties. It was founded in 1795 by John Fitzpatrick as a stop on the Erie Canal. The community rapidly grew, becoming an important transportation center for farmers and traders travelling between Buffalo and Albany. In 1825, the community was moved to its current location on the east side of Spring Valley Lake after landowner James Caldwell donated 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land to create the village. During the 19th century, Spring Valley also became known for its produces such as peas and lentils, strawberries, apples, potatoes and other vegetables. By 1917, Spring Valley had a population of about 1,200 people. However, during World War I it experienced significant damage from German artillery fire which destroyed most of the village buildings including schools and churches. After the war, spring valley slowly recovered but experienced another wave of population growth in the late 20th century due to waves of immigration from all over Europe. Todayspring valley has a population of about 3K residents living within a radius of 5 miles (8 km).
In 1828, John C. Kapp bought a large piece of land in Spring Valley, New York from the Van Rensselaer family. He named his new farm "The Kapp Farm". In 1829, he built a log cabin on the property and started to raised cows and pigs. The first crop that was grown on the farm was corn. In 1830, John C. Kapp married Anna (née Schermerhorn). They had two children: John Fenton Kapp and Anna Maria Schermerhorn Kapp. In 1834, the town of Spring Valley was founded by Reverend Samuel Morse and others nearby landowners. Reverend Morse donated land for the town to be established on and he also provided financial support for its development. The first settlers in Spring Valley were farmers who grew corn, hay, potatoes, beans, apples, etc. over time until 1860 when coalmining began operations in the area which led to increased population growth and demand for more goods and services available within the small townscape
