Rockefeller, which is still in operation today. Over time, more and more rifles were being made with barrel lengths of up to 100 feet (30 meters). Barrels became an important part of gunners’ arsenals because they could provide a longer range for firing shots at targets. In 1906, the first revolver in Spring Valley was created by John Wickersham Sr., who also founded the Wickersham Rifle Company. This revolver was called the “Wickerham Model 1897” and it enjoyed great popularity among gun owners and hunters across America. By 1912, the population of Spring Valley had reached over 1,500 people. In addition to making weapons and ammunition, some early businesses in Spring Valley included lumberyards and agricultural businesses. By 1925, there were five companies manufacturing shotguns in this town: Swift-Brine Manufacturing Company; Alford & Sons Shotguns; American Arms Manufacturing Company; Purdy Manufacturing Company; and Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation. After World War II ended, many manufacturers closed their doors due to cessation of hostilities or government restrictions on firearm production. However, some companies such as Winchester continued to produce firearms until the early 1970s when production ceased alltogether due to changing regulations surrounding hunting licenses within New York State

In 1904 John Matson purchased title to 1/3rd of section 10 & 11 from Arnold Fenton for $225 cash + interest @ 6%. This land later became known as Matson Place which still stands today adjacent to Main Street just west of Old Post Office Road (&Route 5) & east side OF NY State Thruway! Covering an area now bounded by NY State Route 25northwest & Erie Canal southwesterly; within current town limits! Matson Place lay fallow for many years until springValley resident James Laughlin homesteaded & began cultivation there in 1916 following his release from prison where he had been serving time for larceny! After developing his property further overnight MrLaughlin’s home still stands today surrounded by vegetable gardens/ orchards (& approx 2 miles WSW Of NY Line) adjoining private roads leading thereto (& 3+ miles ESE Of Elmira), making him one of earliest examplesof suburban homeownership inNY stateWWII era!! His involvement w/ farm life ledMrLaughlinTo coin epithet “The Lord’s GARDENER” – an appellation long held& respected By locals residing therein thruout their lives Today! TodaySpringValley features over 20 businesses with over 10 fulltime employees including 4 fabric stores(including two mainstay brands JBH Fabrics Inc., Holland Mill Textiles Inc., SHOPrite?), 2 Sheet Metal Fabricators ( locallyowned both here since 1978!), 1 Cement Truckstop (recently moved closer To Center Rd.), 2 Veterinary Clinics (one Rheumatology Clinic - Owned And Operated By Drs McDermott And Brown – Also offers Basic Care For Dogs & Cats!), 3 Grain Millers (!), 1 Bakery (DairyFREE!), 1 Glass Blowing Studionascent From Home Depot!, 4 Restaurants - Top names include Blue Grass Inn Restaurant (+1 location), Chili's Mexican Cafe (+2 locations), Buffalo Wild Wings ($) - Homeickys Pub closed last year but reopened as BWP BBQ ($) - All these restaurants offer delivery service too!!! Now 8 years old...still going strong!!!A lot has changed since then but most notably First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visited Winter Park…during her time as Secretary Of State here she stopped by our schoolhouse….It was great seeing all our kids again after so many years………..& boy did they react!!!! We were having lunch at Chili's before they announced their specialties!!!! Can you believe we've been open 8 years????????? Our motto still remains: GOOD FOOD THAT GOOD ENOUGH TO KEEP US BUSY!!!!!

In 1917, it merged with the neighboring communities of Jamaica Plain and Newton to form a new city calledSpringfield.
