In 1870, a sawmill and grist mill were built inSpring Valley by Amos Ewing and his son-in-law David Starrhill. The mill produced flour for local markets as well as exported flour to Canada and Europe. In 1902, the mills were destroyed by fire but were rebuilt and remained in operation until 1981 when they were sold to Nabisco Corporation. The population of Spring Valley declined significantly after World War II due to an economic decline caused by automation of manufacturing jobs in America.
