The village was founded in 1792 by the Reverend Dr. Benjamin Franklin. The first post office was established in 1793, and the first store was built in 1800. In 1825, the village became a station on the Erie Canal. The canal connected Buffalo to New York City, and Spring Valley saw heavy traffic during this time. In 1863, the town of Rochester merged with Spring Valley, and it formally became a part of Rochester on July 1, 1866. The population of Spring Valley decreased from its peak in 1920 to 1970 due to immigration and development outside of the village boundaries.
