Sleepy Hollow is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Westchester and Putnam counties. It began as a small Indian village called Peekskill, and was renamed Sleepy Hollow after President Washington's visit to the area in 1794. The town was first settled by Dutch farmers in the early 1800s, and developed into a prosperous agricultural community. In 1814, Sleepy Hollow was incorporated as a village, and soon became an important center for trade and commerce in the region. In 1830, however, the town's fortunes changed when Tories burned down several local businesses during a night raid. This event inspired many people within Sleepy Hollow to secede from theirvillage counterparts and form their own community under the name of "Hollow" (later shortened to "Hollow Hills"). By 1839, however, most of what remain of Sleepy Hollow had been destroyed by fire or natural disaster. However, due to its location on Route 5A—a major highway connecting New York City with Albany—the town continued to thrive until at least World War II. During that time it experienced several surges in population due to wartime manufacturing jobs and military recruitment drives. As recently as 1960, only about 30% of the present-day population claimed descent from descendants of those who lived in Sleepy Hollow during its heyday; but today almost all residents are descended from immigrants who arrived during or after the war (and some still carry traces of Dutch culture).

Sleepy Hollow is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. Sleepy Hollow is located on the southern border of the town of Williamsburg and is bordered by the towns of West Egg andEast Egg on the north, Clinton and Scranton on the east, and Hamburg on the south. The name "Sleepy Hollow" was derived from an Indian word meaning "hollow where there are no trees." In 1792 John Jacob Astor bought land in what is now Sleepy Hollow for $5 per acre. In 1868 Epsom & Clay millinery manufacturer James Fenton moved to Sleepy Hollow from Utica, New York because he found it easier to get work here than in Utica due to its rural setting. The Sleepy Hollow Presbyterian Church was built in 1870. By 1902 much of what is now Sleepy Hallow had been developed as a farming area with small farms scattered around several dozen homes; however many residents still lived in their own homes until about 1930 when subdivisions started being developed throughout Erie County as part of nationwide suburbanization plans that were initiated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his Great Depression years. A post office called Sleepy Hollow opened in 1875, but closed permanently in 1907 due to lack of business growth there; however a reopening occurred in 1912 under then-Postmaster General Amos Kendall with service beginning September 9th that year. In 1916 a large dance hall located near present day Main Street and Elm Street (the only one remaining from when it operated) became home to local bands playing popular American standards such as those by Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw before it burned down due to arson two years later; however another dance hall was erected nearby soon afterward and continued operations until 1977 which also served as the first high school within easy walking distance for students living outside of town limits until it closed too due to declines in enrollment over time). During World War II many workers who came through Buffalo Soldiers camps camped beside East Egg Creek west of modern day Catoctin Road while they were training here before moving back west into Buffalo where they resumed their lives once they completed their military service; this area would be used for more camping during peacetime until development eliminated most traces of these encampments leading upriver towards White Marsh began taking place begun shortly afterwards making vast amounts of open space between creek banks available for development without impacting natural habitats or water features etc..
