In 1824, Sleepy Hollow was renamed to "Hollow" after a local hunter found a hollow log while hunting deer in the area. Sleepy Hollow is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 11,844 at the 2010 census. Sleepy Hollow is northeast of Yonkers and south of White Plains. It was first settled in 1792 by the Dutch and then purchased by English colonists in 1795. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn and other crops. By 1810, there were about 230 people living in Sleepy Hollow. In 1814, the town received its name from Ichabod Crane, who had been killed near the village by Indians on Halloween night two years earlier. In 1825, Ichabod Crane's nephews started a cotton gin in nearby White Plains; this revived the local cotton industry which had died out a few decades earlier because of disease and competition from slave plantations. In 1830 Sleepy Hollow got its own post office with Reuben Hurd as its first Selectman. During the American Civil War (1865-1868), many residents fled to Canada to avoid draft duty; however, some returned after hostilities ended and founded several small businesses such as an inn and gristmill that continued until after World War II when they all moved away again due to changes within the military economy. Today most of the structures built during pre-war times remain extant: The original white clapboarding courthouse building still stands (completed in 1896), while Second Congregational Church (modeled after Whitefield's Anglican Church) was dedicated on October 15th 1954 just north of downtown Sleepy Hollow where it remains to this day one of only three remaining standing churches from that period west of Boston proper!

The town was first settled in 1792 by farmers from Pennsylvania who came overland through what is now Canada. By 1800, there were only about 10 families living in Sleepy Hollow. In 1805, General George Washington Crossing the Delaware River made Sleepy Hollow an important stop on his road trip to Yorktown during the American Revolution. After Washington's death in 1799, his family moved to nearby White Plains and began farming there. In 1810, they sold their farm and moved back to Sleepy Hallow where they lived until their death in 1847. Proprietary rights to land near Sleepy Hollow were granted by King George IV of Great Britain to Colonel John Strickland in 1814 as part of a deal that allowed him control over much of western New York after he won a military campaign against American forces under General James Wilkinson during the War of 1812. The town of Sleepy Hollow was first settled by Germans in 1795 and named after Mount Head which rises to about above sea level in neighboring Ulster County. In 1834, officials decided that the name should be changed to Haverford Township because of its distance from Pennsylvania's capital Harrisburg and the Philadelphia area then known as Haverford Township. In 1868, a post office was established at Sleepy Hollow with the name "Haverford." The name had been given to a small stream flowing through the town on which it sat. A postmaster named Sievers supervised mail delivery until 1886 when he took over from George Crouch who had served since 1846. A sawmill operated near Happy Valley for many years before being replaced by an Elevator Company plant built in 1903 by John D’Angelo and his brother-in-law Edward Crouse. D’Angelo became president of Niagara Elevator Company Inc., one of America's largest elevator companies, when it merged into WTEL Corporation in 1925. In 1941, during World War II, Niagara Elevator Company (later part of NFIB) converted two locomotives into military ambulances called Empire Builder #0001 and Empire Builder #0002 to stricken numbers 381 and 382 respectively; these were used as transports between Syracuse and Naples both during daylight hours and at night when required for military activities outside of Syracuse or Naples itself; they remain operational today as tourist attractions along Route 511 near where they once stood. However not all activity associated with elevator businesses stopped after World War II; a new era began with the arrival of automated transportation systems such as buses that made travel more convenient than taking personal vehicles to various destinations including airports or train stations located far from home).
