Sleepy Hollow is a small town in upstate New York, just east of the Mohawk River. The population was 3,982 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern border of Broome County and Chemung County. The area that now makes up Sleepy Hollow was first settled by Indian tribes in 1776. In 1802, John Augustus Hallowell bought part of what is now Sleepy Hollow from the Senecas. He laid out a road through the woods and named it after his home town of Hallowell, England. In 1827, Nathan Sargent purchased land to the north and west of where Sleepy Hollow now stands from Nicholas Brady. One year later, he built a large cabin called "Holloway's Cabin" near present-day Throop Road and Park Avenue. soon afterward he started to plant apple trees there which became famous for their sweetness and red coloration. Nathan Sargent's tree nursery still stands today on Park Avenue between Throop Road and Main Street in Sleepy Hollow. The company was founded by Nathan Sargent Sr., who also ran a general store in town during his lifetime. After his death in 1865, his son Nathan Jr., took over running the business until it closed in 1969 when they merged with Swift's Apple Store down the street to form one big company called Swift's Hardware & Apples Incorporated (SHAW).

In 1835-36, James Krieger built a cabin here and named it Krieger's Hill after himself and his family. In 1837-38 Captain Augustus Porter surveyor laid out a road through this forested area which became known as Porter's Post Road. In 1850-1851 Elias Putnam surveyed this land for US$5 per acre and named it Putnam's Purchase after himself and his brother Isaac who also participated in the survey. In 1858-59 Drury Lane Presbyterian Church was founded here by Revd Charles Lamb with $10 from Drury Lane theater owner James Hutton Fordham Sr.. Reverend Fenton Wiley officiated at its first service on October 12th 1860 under a maple tree near present day Elmira Road/Route 9W between Old Sturbridge Road (now Ethan Allen Highway) on one side and Stroudsburg Avenue (now Main Street) on the other side - both now within Sleepy Hollow Village boundaries . Drury Lane Presbyterian Church had an attendance of 248 people when it opened its doors – up until 1925 when enrollment had dwindled to just 82 people because of lack of funds . Reverend Adam Goodrich organized a prayer meeting at Doctor Moses Brown’s house on November 25th 1865 which attracted 50 men including Wadsworth Leigh Emerson who offered prayers for financial support ..... On December 5th 1865 an act was passed providing for religious education in public schools in matters pertaining thereto ..... A new church building was dedicated by Bishop Townsend on January 7th 1870 inside what is now First Congregational United Methodist Church - just east of where Present Day Main Street meets Route 9W ... original cornerstone still resides today within Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
