Sleepy Hollow is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 11,321 at the 2010 census. It is named after the Sleepy Hollow–Rockville Centre Railroad station on its east side. The village of Sleepy Hollow was laid out in 1825 by Nicholas Tapp and others as part of a larger land grant to Colonel Johnampingen. A post office called "Sleepy Hollow" was established in 1829, and remained in operation until 1840. In 1842, George Washington Carver settled near present-day Sleepy Hollow and developed what is now the Carver Farmstead into a farm community known for its cornmeal pudding recipe. In 1847, Elijah White opened a general store and tavern in what is now the Village Hall building within spitting distance of where General Motors now stands. A new railroad station was built on this site in 1886 by the New York Central Railroad with assistance from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The original structure remains standing as one of several surviving examples of Romanesque Revival architecture in Westchester County; it has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The train station served as both a passenger stop for passengers proceeding westbound along the Hudson River Valley Railway line to Albany or points beyond and also as an important freight depot for items such as coal and lumber coming down from upstate New York into Westchester County during this time period. The railway company closed down at some point between 1940 and 1945; most likely due to World War II shortages caused by changes in transportation patterns brought about by war efforts. After years of decline, Railroadtown became an affordable housing development located adjacent to Amtrak's own main line operations which began serving Sleepy Hollow proper beginning around 2004 through various partnerships between Amtrak/New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) and local developers/property owners/ Developers IWM Partners LLC et al..
