Sleepy Hollow, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. It was founded in 1792 by farmers and settlers who found the area rich in minerals and wood for shipbuilding. The name Sleepy Hollow may have originated from a Native American word meaning "the place where there are no trees." The first post office at Sleepy Hollow was established in 1824. By 1830, much of the original land had been taken up by plantations, leaving only a few acres undeveloped. However, during the 1830s and 1840s, several wealthy white men decided to settle down in what is now Sleepy Hollow. They named their new community after themselves – Sleepy Hollow (or as it was called then) because they were exhausted from working all night long on their farms. In 1847, two sons of George Washington were married at the home of Judge Moses Greenough in Sleepy Hollow. The couple's children were later forced to leave their ancestral home after Massachusetts became part of the United States following its independence from Great Britain. In 1857, however, Judge Greenough sold his house and property to John Purdy for $10,000 dollars cash which he used to purchase large tracts of land around Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This property would become one of the most important parts of Sleeping Bear culture as it served as a burial ground for many notable people including General Anthony Wayne and Buffalo Bill Cody. During World War II-era bombing raids onSleepy Hollow- numerous homes were destroyed or severely damaged but some still stand today including the Chenault House which once served as President Franklin D Roosevelt's bedroom during his time as Governor of New York City from 1933-1937; also survived are three other homes belonging to Presidents Harry S Truman (1945), Dwight Eisenhower (1953) and Richard Nixon (1969).

In 1718, the British captured and burned down the village at Fort Nassau on Long Island after a battle with the French. Sleepy Hollow was first mentioned in print in 1692 when John Winthrop wrote about his visit to the region.
