In 1814, the first gun battle in the town took place when two rival gangs, the Haunting of Hill House and the Whitechapel Gang, battled each other on Long Island. The fight resulted in many dead and wounded including General Lafayette who fought side by side with the local militia until he was fatally shot.
Sleepy Hollow is a small town in Upstate New York located on the border of Ontario and Erie Counties. It is bordered by Ontario to the east, Clearbrook Township to the west, and Canada to the north. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. The name "Sleepy Hollow" was derived from two sources: one from an old German name for a settlement next to a bog where people would go around during the night for refreshment, and another from Dutch settlers who called this area Kesselmeer because of their habit of ships anchoring there during summertime. The first mention of Sleepy Hollow occurs in 1614 when John Smith found it in what is now Canada. He named it after his ancestor Ossian who dwelt near Banff in Scotland. In 1736, Jonas Weiser bought all of present-day Upstate New York from the Iroquois Confederacy and renamed it Weiser Country after himself. By 1800, there were over 100 white families living in Sleepy Hollow while only 12 Indian families lived there. In 1845 Governor John Auld appointed George Washington as sheriff of Ulster County which included parts of Upstate New York west of Kingston Heights including Sleepy Hollow. Washington had been headmaster at Trinity School in Kingston Heights since 1831 and purchased part of Sawmill Road which forms today's boundary between Clearbrook Township and Canada Village before he became sheriff. During his years as sheriff, Washington also developed a friendship with Major General Israel Putnam whose home was just south of Sleepy Hollow on Sawmill Road (now Canadian Village Drive). George Washington Park is located within sight of downtown Sleepy Hollow on Sawmill Road between Canadian Village Drive and Haggerty Lane; it features a picnic area with restrooms, playgrounds for children, fire pits/grills for adults,and several large woods full of trees that are popular among hikers and bird watchers during winter months when other activities are not allowed inside the park!

In 1922, an American R-22 bomber crashed into Sleepy Hollow while being flown over by RAF Squadron 173 airmen stationed at Schenectady Municipal Airport on their way to bomb Hiroshima; all aboard died as a result of the crash. This tragedy led to increased tourism in town and helped make it known around the world as a popular tourist destination for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Today, much like Hiroshima 50 years ago, Sleepy Hollow is a popular tourist spot with many visitors interested in learning more about its rich American Revolutionary history and culture along with experiencing some of its unique attractions such as ghost tours or just spending hours walking around its streets filled with historic homes dating back to colonial times!
