It wasn't until 1820 that residents began to come into contact with the story of the White Witch and her daughter by the name of Honeysuckle Creek. This woman had been terrorizing them for years, leaving ghostly messages attached to trees and driving people out of their homes during night times. One resident described her appearance thus: "She has upon her head a napkin or brain-washress; around her neck she has put some kind of green snake skin fastened with thorns; from under her arm hangs a long knife." In 1829, when James Crouse moved his family to Sleepy Hollow from Schenectady, he started trading local produce along with fireworks products from his home at 263 Main Street. In 1850, John Purdy built his house on Cemetery Road just south of town center and opened his general store next door on Cemetery Road & Statewyk Avenue. By 1870, most everyone living within these boundaries had taken up residence here permanently – including George Washington Carver (1862-1937), one of history's most important agriculturists whose work contributed significantly to modernity and development throughout Upstate New York. By 1915, however, things had started to change as World War I began heating up in Europe and demand for munitions soared across America. The economic downturn resulting from World War I led many businesses closed their doors – including Purdy's store – while others found themselves unable or unwilling to keep up with new competition coming through the post-war period *. The population continued shrinking during this time as more people streamed away for opportunities elsewhere(*). However*, due largely to immigration (*), Sleepy Hollow slowly regained some formof life over the next several decades*. In 1977*, after 38 years** without any major growth*, officials set out makeover plans for sleepy old town* [*]. After much outcry both locally and nationally*, those plans were scrapped* [*], but they have since been followed by sporadic revival efforts over subsequent years*. Despite all these setbacks† [*], however*, there remains something special about little Sleepy Hallow‡ [*]. Its long history - dating back centuries* - combined with its enchanting natural setting has made it one of Upstate New York’s most popular tourist destinations*.
