Slavery was not abolished here until 1865 when Westchester County became part of New York State; however, slavery did continue until 1861 when it was finally outlawed throughout this entire United States by Abraham Lincoln via Executive Order No. 8802/65 (the “New York Abolition Act”). Since its destruction, Sleepy Hollow has been resurrected as an attraction for tourists and locals alike. The area now known as Sleepy Hollow was first mentioned in 1581 as "Sleeping Houlihan" and by 1724 it had been renamed "Sleepy Hollow". In 1814, General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga and Sleepy Hollow became part of Albany County. In 1829, when that county was disbanded, it merged with Imitation Valley County to form Schoharie County. In 1832, when Schoharie County was disbanded again, it merged with Montgomery County to form Onondaga County. As Onondaga Counties were formed, they also changed their names to include Sleepy Hollow –derived from Mohawk word 'sha-lay-wah' meaning 'sleepful place'). The original white settler in Sleepy Hollow was Jonas Hill who arrived around 1625. He built a small cabin on the edge of what is now known as Fort Pond which he called Hill's Manor or perhaps his home name (the hill being called "Hollow" because there wasn't any water available). A few years later he married Susanna White and together they started farming land around what is now known as Fort Pond. They raised chickens and pigs and sold their produce door-to-door throughout the village for a two penny price per meal (a very low cost back then!). During this time there wasn't much traffic through sleepy hollow so no one really knew how things were going! Over time more people started arriving including some Huguenots who had emigrated from France during King James II's war with Spain. Eventually most everyone within close proximity would know each other pretty well! When French troops invaded New Netherland in 1675 they found many Dutch settlers living cheek by jowl without any distinction between them! The result? Many Huguenots decided to flee northward rather than fight against English forces! Some did manage to make it out alive but many others didn't fare so well –some lost their lives outright while others managed to escape but were captured by English forces and decimated! All told about 50%+ of all those killed during King James II's war with Spain were Huguenots! So when General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga his decision meant certain death for most colonists within sight!!! soon after General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga sleepy hollow turned into another victim of english rule...many people (huguenots included) chose flight over fight
