Sleepy Hollow is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Sullivan County. Sleepy Hollow is bordered by the towns of Goshen to the east and Westchester to the south. Sleepy Hollow has been inhabited since prehistoric times. One of the first Europeans to visit it was Pierre Richard de Montresor, who passed through in 1614 on his way from Albany to Albany Castle. In 1746, Colonel James Wright founded a small village here on land he had purchased from Native American chief Tahlasseeckaoua. The first settler was John Browning, who arrived in 1802 and built a gristmill and sawmill here. In 1807, Sleepy Hollow became part of Sullivan County when it was formed from parts of Orangeburgh and Hyde Park Counties. In 1812, Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt bought 1 million acres (500 km²) of land near Saratoga Springs for $6 million dollars which he divided into many parcels so that he could build his Tennessee River ghost fleet canal system including locks at Harlem Heights and Yonkers Lock—the largest such lock structure built in America at that time—and also create new villages within Sleeping Hollow: Newport News (founded 1813), Oyster Bay (1815), Groton (1819), Southampton (1821), Oakville (1824), Reedsburg (1828), Georgetown (1830). He named one or more these villages after himself – Vanderbilt Village (Newport News; opened 1830) – Rochelle Falls(Oyster Bay; opened 1822) – Fallstown(Groton; open 1827) – Hillsborough(Reedsburg; founded 1830) – Staten Island Ferry Landing(Georgetown; established 1840). The village idiot named Washington Irving made up much of what is now known about Sleepy Hollow during his stay here between 1792-1795 while working as an author for General Nicholas Trumbull's military campaign against French forces occupying Canada during Prince George's War. Sleepy Hollow is a small town located in upstate New York, on the border of Ontario and Quebec. The name is derived from its location – on the old course of the Mohawk River. In 1720, when work began on the Canada-US border, parts of what is now Sleepy Hollow were included in this area. After a skirmish between British troops and French settlers in 1759, the British built a stockade around the town to control it. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General James Kempton's force came across an encampment of American militiamen at Sleepy Hollow. The Americans burned down part of the Canadian fortifications here to prevent their occupation by Great Britain. The first settlers arrived in Sleepy Hollow in 1800. They were farmers who used Indian labor for their crops and livestock. By 1830, there were sixty families living here; thirty-six of these lived within one mile (one kilometer) of each other. A mill was built here soon after and became an important center for trade with surrounding villages. By 1865, however, only six families remained in Sleepy Hollow and most of its inhabitants had left for larger towns or cities east of Ontario Bridge. In 1892–93 a local school was built by Obadiah Stevens using money donated by local residents; it served as a model for many similar schools throughout New York State over the next decade or so. In 1901–02 Jacob Riis wrote about his experiences as editor-in-chief of Harper's Magazine in an article entitled "A Ghost Town." This article popularized interest in sleepwalking among people across America and led to more attention being given to local legends such as “Sleeping Bear” and “The Headless Horseman”—the latter depicted prominently on postcards and T-shirts beginning in 1916). During World War I much activity took place at Sleepy Hollow; two factories were set up here—a munitions plant producing munitions for both belligerents and a machine shop that made artillery rounds for use against German forces along with other war supplies; both facilities closed down after hostilities ended but continue to be cited as examples of how wartime production can impact small communities adversely today still functioning under different names including “Plymouth” Factory Park” near Niagara Falls while also housing several companies which produce products related to military engineering Since retirement age has increased especially due to Baby Boomer retirements some have decided not want any contact with society anymore so they can live life alone without having any obligations

It was founded by the Dutch in 1614, and was originally called "Kleine Vliegende Hollander" (Small Flying Dutchman). The first settler in the town was Nicholas Haverhill, who arrived in 1625. In 1797, Sleepy Hollow was burned down by the British during the height of their Revolutionary War campaign against America.
