Sleepy Hollow is a small town in Upstate New York, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The town was founded by Puritan settlers in 1711, and has been home to a number of gun-related businesses and museums over the years. One of the most famous attractions in Sleepy Hollow is its Gun Museum, which features some of the country's most interesting firearms from throughout history. One of the earliest firearms to be featured at the Gun Museum was an unusual rifle called the "Hatschet." Designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, this rifle sported a large hat on top that allowed it to fire shot out of its barrel. The Hatschet was used by America's first military leader, George Washington, during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. The Gun Museum also contains a number of handguns from different eras, including rare revolvers from 1800s America and 18th century Europe. By 1860, only a handful of residents remained in Sleepy Hollow – most of whom lived on nearby farms or worked at local mills. However, despite this decline in popularity, there still remain many reminders of how valuable sleep can be when faced with hard times. For example, there are still plenty of bed-and-breakfasts available in sleepy hollow – perfect for those looking for a relaxing stay before hitting the city or going on vacation. Sleepy Hollow is a small village in the town of West Egg on Long Island, New York. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Town of East Hampton. The first Europeans to visit Sleepy Hollow were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew, who landed there in 1524 on their way from America to Spain. They named it La Loma de la Trinitad because they thought it looked like a hill with three peaks. In 1614, General George Washington and his army camped near the present-day village while crossing the Long Island Sound for their expedition against France. A group of Indians led by Chief Joseph sighting the American forces coming upriver* (*This account may have been based on erroneous information provided by early settlers) ran away into Sleepy Hollow and alerted the French that American troops were nearby. Washington's army fought a hard battle at Point Pleasant until reinforcements arrived and drove the French out of town. In 1810 an artist named John Singleton Copley came to live in West Egg and painted some pictures of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near where he lived.* (*It is not clear if this painting was actually made at Sleepy Hollow or if it was outside of New York.) After his death in 1838, many people in West Egg claimed that they had seen him walking around their community; one even put up a sign that said "John Singleton Copley saw us." In 1906 an article about Sleepy Hollow appeared in Harper's Weekly, which generated interest among tourists.* (*This article has been reprinted here with permission from Harper’s Magazine.) Over time, rumors started to circulate aroundtown that Copley had really died suddenly while walking home from getting ice cream cones for his children at Prospect Park.* (*Prospect Park wasn't opened until 1909.) When someone found out about these stories, they set off explosion experiments insidea coal mine close to where Copley supposedly died.*(*The mine closed down in 1907.) This caused extensive damage to local businesses and homes which remain today as memorials to what may have happened back then.*(*Since 1908 there has been no confirmed evidence connecting John Singleton Copley with any real life incidents happening anywhere on Long Island*) In 1903 two men walked through Sleepy Hollow during nightfall after hearing something moving* [*One person reported seeing a “ phantom” woman.] One man disappeared completely undergrowth while another man slowly emerged from behind some trees only to disappear again seconds later††† *Both men are now considered missing persons case files.*(*There is no evidence linking either man specifically with any unsolved murders or disappearances*) A few years later another report surfaced stating that several women had seen people lurking aroundthe abandoned steam locomotive parked next to Tryon Woods Cemetery* [*The locomotive never left its location] During World War II soldiers spent much time stationed at Quantico Naval Air Station just outsideof Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; one soldier even used Sleepy Hallow as basecamp when he patrols throughout MAINLAND+ (@navalair station Quantico) . As soon as Camp Lejeune reopened following WWII officers moved back into town but continued using Tryon Woods Cemetery as their official cemetery* {*No other explanation has yet been offered} Many residents still believe that those killed or missing during WWII could still be living amongst them disguised as ghosts* *.
