The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and named "Hollow Point". In 1777, Sleepy Hollow was purchased by Revolutionary War veteran General Israel Putnam. The Putnams donated land to the town for a public square and graveyard. A school district was created in 1879, and a Methodist church was built in 1885. In 1906, Sleepy Hollow became an incorporated community under the name of "New Hyde Park". In 1969 it changed its name to "Sleepy Hollow" after Haverhill resident David Smeaton proposed that it be given its own ZIP code. The town has been hit hard by economic decline since 2000, with falling population growth and shrinking job opportunities. However, some businesses have reopened including a clothing store that reopened after being closed for eight years due to arson; as well as two restaurants which were both open when their owners were killed in murders dating back to 2004. - Sleepy Hollow is home to one of only three remaining pre-Civil War village meetinghouses still standing in upstate New York - originally built between 1795 and 1800 on land donated by George Clinton - making it an important tourist spot for those visiting the area .
