Sleepy Hollow is a small town in upstate New York, located near the foot of the Catskill Mountains. The settlement was founded by German colonists in 1701 and named after a haunt of the gothic novel's protagonist, Ichabod Crane. The town became an important center for coal mining and manufacturing during the late 19th century, but declined after World War II. Today, it remains a largely agricultural community with a population of around 100 people. The history of Sleepy Hollow begins with the founding of the town by German colonists in 1701. At that time, there were no towns in this area and many Native Americans lived hereabouts. One account suggests that Ichabod Crane—the protagonist from Burr Ridge (1871) and associated character fromahan's ghost story—hunted wild animals near where Sleepy Hollow now stands. In 1811, General George Washington visited this area while on his way to battle against Great Britain at Saratoga Springs. While visiting nearby Charlestown he rested at Manor Farm on October 26th; however, his tent was discovered burned down two days later when British troops raided Manor Farm while he was away military duty. This event is often considered to be one of the first battles fought in America. Over time though many other settlements were founded throughout these mountains including Bethlehem (1792), Whitehall (1812), West Pointville (1824), Maidenhead(1834), Canandaigua(1837), etc.—all without ever achieving much note or notoriety beyond their location within easy driving distance of each other like Sleepy Hollow did until its incorporation intoon July 1st 1881 as part of what is known as “Old Ulster” region following amalgamation among several hamlets within Durham County according to census records kept by sheriff’s deputies between 1840-1920 inclusive which are microfilm copies available at Syracuse University Library Archives under headings such as “NewUlstershire”). These early years saw help from Quaker farmers who had settled around Louden Falls outside Ofensham Gorge*(* Note: * According to some sourcesSleepy Hollow may have actually been established before then!
