Sleepy Hollow is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles east of the city of Buffalo. It was founded in 1811 by Polish refugees, and named after the hollow that used to be near their farmstead. The town has a population of around 460 residents as of 2010. The area now known as Sleepy Hollow was first settled by English colonists in the 1660s. In 1724, James McGuire and his family arrived in what is now Sleepy Hollow from Ireland with 640 acres (240 hectares) and began farming it. By 1800, the McGuires had acquired 1,200 acres (500 hectares). They also developed a small sawmill on the stream that ran through their property. In 1811, several hundred Polish refugees came to America and started farming in what is now Sleepy Hollow. They brought with them some of their traditional dishes, such as borscht and Kissel pottage. After a few years, most of these settlers died from smallpox or other diseases common among immigrants at this time. However, some managed to keep alive and eventually founded two churches in Sleepy Hollow: First Presbyterian Church in 1814 and Methodist Episcopal Church in 1827. The latter church still stands today inside the old school building on Main Street.
