The population continued to grow until 1830 when it peaked at over 60,000 settlers. About this time many new mills were built throughout the city including one by John Latham which later became known as Buffalo Bridge Mills. In 1831-1832 an event called "the Great Famine" struck western New York causing mass starvation among farmers unable to pay high prices for goods exported to Europe (primarily England). This led to a decrease in population growth rate by about 10%. During World War II much of Schenectady's peacetime manufacturing activity took place within large munitions plants located along Mohawk Boulevard near modern day Uniondale High School; these plants produced military supplies such as ammunition and TNT during wartime while also employing thousands of workers during peacetime production turnovers.
