The population was 17,812 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth-most populous town in New York State after Kingston, Rochester and Yonkers. The first Europeans to visit what is now Schenectady were French colonists in 1624 who named it La Crique des Ancêtres (the Cradle of Ancestors). He named it for General James Clinton of Ulster Regiment who had led an expedition against the British at Saratoga in 1777 and had been rewarded with a land grant near Schenectady by George Washington. The Dutch called the area "Hertogenbosch" (Heritage), and English settlers renamed it "Criekelijck". In 1814, during the War of 1812, an American squadron under Commodore John Rogers encountered HMS Leopard while sailing upriver from Albany en route to attack Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario; the battle resulted in a decisive American victory over the Royal Navy ship that caused Britain's headache diplomatically for many years afterwards. In 1821, Alexander Hamilton migrated from Scotland and settled here with his wife into a small farmstead known as "Eldridge". They began building their house on present-day Fifth Avenue between Church Street and Montgomery Street - one of only two houses built in what is now Schenectady Township before 1800. The Hamiltons were among early settlers who developed extensive commercial holdings around their farmstead which became known as "The Village." Their heirs continue to own much of this land through absentee ownership today. In 1840–41, when loggers arrived from Maine aboard ships anchored off Smith's Landing on Mohawk Riverine Valley Lake Erie to cut down logs for lumber processing alongshore near modern day Schentonville – they discovered valuable lead ore located along nearby Cherry Creek – local residents petitioned county officials to prohibit logging because it would damage creekbanks and destroy ancient forest cover dating back 6500 years!
