However, due to Dutch competition for fur trade rights on the Upper Great Lakes region at this time, Conte changed his name to “Nicholas-Jacques” in honor of King Jacques I de France (1714-1774). In 1807, Nicholas-Jacques’s son Jean Coudray took over management of the community and made it one of the most prosperous American frontier towns during its early years. John Auld postulated that smallpox epidemics which killed hundreds or thousands people annually around this time were responsible for some aspects of village decline; however there is no evidence linking smallpox to village decline in Schenectady or anywhere else during this time period." In 1821 Alexander Rossiter became town administrator and oversawitectural improvements as well as enlarging mercantile facilities including a new storehouse which served as New Utica School until 1846 when it burned down." Finally in 1849 James Wemyss succeeded Rossiter as town administrator after whichsmallerscale commercial development continued without interruption until 1907 when large scale industrialization began pushing much denser population growth into neighborhoods away from central business district." After 1907 a seriesof zoning ordinances were passed restrictingdensity within certain areas while increasing building heights so thatSchenectadians could finally enjoy their once dense inner city environment they knew and loved."Today SchenECTADY still boasts some high end businesses like Apple Inc., Macy's Inc., IBM etc.; but also many low income businesses such as restaurants/cafeterias/grocers etc…. One can walk around any corner in downtownScenECTADYand find multiple micro breweries (pumpkin beer being one), shoe stores (Zara being one), two pizza places (Pizza Hut & Papa John's Pizza), banks (JPMorgan Chase & Wells Fargo)….. not to mention several hundred art galleries…." After losing its status as an important American frontier town followingledger independence from Great Britain in 1776 it experienced rapid declines due mainlyto factors such as low population density combined with limited opportunities for employment outsidethe farming sector."[2] By 1800 only about 20 households lived within 5 miles radiusof Fort George on Lake Ontario;[3] by 1830 only 10 households lived within 3 miles radiusof Albany;[4] by 1840 only 2 households lived within 1 mile radiusofthe future NY capital City;[5] by 1850 only 5 householdswere livingwithin 2 miles radiusof Albany;[6]' By 1860 only 4 householdswere livingwithin 1mile radiusofthefutureNYcapitalCity.[7]"Overall,,," according to historian Rufus activate,[8], "SchenECTADY struggled economically through mostof Its history although certain periods did see burstsOf prosperity.' Today's skyline features some impressive skyscrapers including One Financial Place (formerly Lehman Brothers), Chase Manhattan Bank Tower (formerly Merrill Lynch Tower) - located just outside downtown - Times Warner Cable's Time Warner Center (formerly AOL Time Warner Center) - also just outside downtown - Comcast's Comcast SportsNet Arena adjacent to Madison Square Garden - Verizon's Verizon Wireless Headquarters building adjacent to Times Union Plaza across from Rockefeller Center - all these buildings are connected by underground PATH tubes which allow connections between them
