Schenectady, New York is a town in Schenectady County, New York, United States. It is the seat of the former Town of Schenectady. The population was 34,851 at the 2010 census. The original name for the town was "Schenectady", but this was changed to Schenectady in 1814 when it became part of Albany. The present-day town was founded by Nicholas Long in 1792 as part of a grant from George Washington to John Dongan. According to one source, Long's grant included 640 acres (2 km²) on what is now Main Street and South Avenue in downtown Schenectady. In 1795, the act that created Schenectady county included parts of what are now the towns of Oneonta and Scotia. According to another source, Partick's Ferry Road—the first road into the new town—was built between 1793 and 1800 by Colchester settler Partick McMahon; it connected Orangeburgh with Canandaigua via Schoharie Creek Valley. In 1800, David Rice formed a ferry company to carry goods across Schoharie Creek Valley between Canandaigua and Utica; he named his company Rice's Ferry Company after himself. The first store on Prospect Street opened in 1802 by Samuel French Jr.; it continued to operate until 1840 when it burned down due to carelessness by its owner. In 1814, during warfare with Great Britain over control of North America following the Jay Treaty ending British sovereignty over North America, Albany took possession of all but two miles (3 km) of Tryon Island in Lake Ontario so that Queen Victoria could use it as an airfield for attacks against American forces located there; thus began Albany's role as an American military center during much of this era. Schenectady, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It is located on the Schenectady River and has been inhabited by humans for over 4,000 years. The area now known as Schenectady was first settled by the Algonquian-speaking Mohawk tribe in 1624-1627. The town was founded on July 6, 1785, by Nicholas Biddle and others from Connecticut who were looking for land to settle after their province of Quebec was ceded to Great Britain. The town was originally named "Hudson Falls" because of the waterfalls that can be seen near thetown center. In 1814, the name changed to "Schenectady" after General John Burgoyne's army defeated British forces at Saratoga Creek. The Battle of Saratoga happened two days before Schenectady's incorporation as a village. After the battle, many soldiers died from disease and starvation while stationed in nearby Albany. This led to much speculation about what may have caused their death since there had been no epidemic during that time period in upstate New York. In 1831, Schenectady became part of the newly formed Town of Albany which remained an independent municipality until it merged with Albany in 1898. In 1847-1848, during America's Civil War, SchenECTADY fought alongside General George McClellan's army against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville outside of Petersburg Virginia After the war ended, much attention turned towards SchenECTADAy due to its strategic importance as it lay between Richmond VA and Washington DC. Reconstruction began following World War II and many businesses were opened in postwar Era including KFC (now fast food chain), Applebees(now Pizza Hut), Dunkin' Donuts(now Wendy's) and Jamba Juice(later Sunoco). Growth continued into modern times with numerous new buildings being erected such as Barnes & Noble bookstore (opened in 2007), Ford Lincoln dealership (opened in 2009) and Rockefeller Center light show building (opened in 2014).
