Schenectady, New York is a small town in upstate New York on the Mohawk River. The population was 18,752 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-most populous town in Upstate New York after Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester. The first European to visit Schenectady was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1785, John Catskill approved of a grant from George Washington to establish a military fortification on the site of present-day Schenectady College. The fort served as Fort Orange until 1795 when it was destroyed by British forces during the American Revolutionary War. After that time, Schenectady became an important commercial center with its own newspapers and banks. In 1814, General James Webb explored what would become Schenectady County and assigned it to Major General Israel Putnam as part of his survey for future Ulysses S. Grant’s Creek Campaign against Native Americans east of Lake Ontario (the Niagara Frontier). putnam built Fort Erie at what is now Oswego Street and developed it into one of America’s leading fur trading posts during this early period of Upper Canada’s growth as a province. In 1828, President Andrew Jackson issued an executive order creating three new counties in western New York: Albany, Orchard Park and Schenectady/Albany County were created from parts of Clinton and Montgomery Counties respectively; while Kingston County was separated from Albany County to form its own government only two years later due largely to political agitation brought about by Anthony Wayne over land grants received by Governor George Clinton from England pursuant to Treaty negotiated at Seneca Falls (1824). During the 1830s scurvy struck many people traveling through Western New York and led Congress to pass legislation providing aid including inoculations for those who contracted it along with other provisions such as empowering state governments to levy taxes on salt pork exported out of their borders

Schenectady, New York is a city in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 30,837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Schoharie County and home to the Schenectady College of Technology and Business Administration. The first permanent settler in what is now Schenectady was Nicholas Coleridge who arrived in 1724 with his family from England. The town was formed on January 1, 1785 by an act of the New York State Legislature when John Johnson became the first Mayor. On November 4th, 1814, during the War of 1812, fought between American and British forces and lasting three weeks,[1] SchenECTADY lost its neutrality but sided with America due to its strategic location midway along both sides of Lake Ontario and as a result became one of the most heavily fortified towns in Upper Canada[2][3][4]. In 1832–33 Benjamin Franklin served as mayor for two terms; he also served as Secretary of State under President Andrew Jackson. In 1835–36 SchenECTADY became one of five places in upstate New York (the others being Buffalo Niagara Falls,Niagara Falls City Limits (NIAGARA), Oswego Springs (OSWEGO), Auburn Hills Township) to apply for statehood as part of a process that culminated with admission into the United States on July 16th, 1837. The application received only negative feedback from officials because there were no objections from other central New York towns such as Albany or Syracuse which had already become U.S.-based cities.[5][6] However despite this lack of enthusiasm from local officials SchenECTADY successfully lobbied for statehood through letters to Congress including one sent by then-Senator James Kenton which argued that "on account [of] ourSituated situation...it would be but little shortening our efforts if we attained incorporation".[7] On February 26th members of the New York General Assembly voted 36-0 not to ratify incorporation until more information could be garnered about how much land would be required and whether or not it would fall within existing Indian reservations[8] Although initially welcomed into fullcitizenship by many locals,[9][10] after gaining some understanding about their concerns regarding taxes and charter rights they voted against joining on October 15th following a heated debate[11][12]). After monthslong negotiations over maps detailing specific limits on residency and business opportunities among other things incorporation finally took place on December 11th with residents voting 73% in favor[13][14]. Although originally intended primarily for agricultural purposes early industry development included munitions factories like Peekskill Arsenal located just southwest of town near modern-day Peekskill Summit Airport while shipbuilding continued apace thanks largely to advances made at nearby Kingston Factory starting around 1830[15], although heavy industry eventually left SchenECTADY behind during World War II withÎISolationism keeping manufacturing away from war zones[16][17][/QUOTE]; however post-war growth has seen significant new development such as Oneonta University(ONTARIO)[18], Starteck Financial Corporation Headquarters Campus located just north east across Route 8 from downtown SchenECTADY., recently announced plans for an $80 million mixed use development known as 'The North Side' adjacent to Ives Landing Park which will include an NBA/WNBA basketball arena,, scenic Hudson Valley Shopping Center established in 2015 adjacent to train stations serving Utica Junction (RUINS) & Cohoes Junction (Hudson Valley)] making it one stoplight away from major metropolitan areas inside commuting distance
The town of Schenectady, New York was founded in 1764 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his wife, Anne. The village of Schenectady was laid out in 1784 by the Rev. John Armstrong. The first school was built in 1805. In 1830, Schenectady became a city within the state of New York following the formation of that state from part of Albany County.
