On October 14, 1857, Schenectady's first gun lock was installed in the City Hall. The lock was made of brass and had a padlock with eight balls. It is said that this lock was designed to deter theft by criminals who were able to break it open. The Gun Locks Company was founded in 1892 by Nicholas Pappas and his brother-in-law, John Larkin. They manufactured gun locks and other lock products for businesses and individuals in Schenectady, Albany, New York. In 1907, the company became known as the Lock Company of America. The Lock Company produced keyless gun locks from 1951 until 1984 when it discontinued production due to competition from electronic security locks manufacturer Master Lock Inc. In 1984, the Lock Company merged with Safe Trends Corporation (now Harris Corporation) which manufactures safe door systems for homes and offices. Safe Trends continued to produce keyless gun locks until 2001 when it discontinued production due to competition from electronic security locks manufacturer Foxboro Firearms Incorporated. Today, theLockCompanyofamerica is a subsidiary of Safe Harbor International Inc., which produces keyless fire door systems for residential properties and businesses throughout North America

In 1807, when Erie Canal was completed through central NY., SchenECTADY became an important transportation hub with ships coming into town to load goods then ferrying them out to Buffalo or Rochester. The canal made it possible for people living in rural areas to get access to jobs and commerce downtown while also making it easier for merchants to transport goods long distances by rail or boat. This growth led to increased development around town as well as new churches, factories, schools and homes being erected; all of which continue today as major landmarks within the city limits. The first European settlers arrived in 1624, when Dutch traders left their vessel on what is now Albany Island for a trading trip to Asia. In 1788, John Jacob Astor built his grand white palace on Governors Island to serve as an vacation home for American millionaires like himself and his wife; he named it "New York" after King George III of Great Britain. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, Schenectady became a military post under US General Winfield Scott's command with artillery batteries stationed along Creek Road near present-day Central Park and Fort Drum (now Brooklyn). The fort served as headquarters until 1815, when it was replaced by Fort Clinton on lower Manhattan's boundariesline with Albany County. In 1821, NY Statehood was granted to America following its victory over Mexico in the Mexican-American War; Schenectady became one of the first cities in America to be erected from scratch within its own borders – unlike other settlements such as Buffalo or Troy which were established through grants from elsewhere in America or from British colonialism. On July 1st 1825 Schenectady became a village when all but two families living there joined forces with those living around White Plains to form that town’s first political body called “the Borough Committee” chaired by Rev Nathaniel Hawthorne who had earlier been elected Clerk Of Unionville Parish Church there later that year despite being only 25 years old! This new Village/Town government quickly enacted some ambitious projects including erecting a public schoolhouse & police station (both still extant), setting up a canal system linking local ponds (& springs) with larger creeks (& rivers) close by so residents could fish & water fowl etc., getting streets paved & lighting them up at night… started having festivals like country fairs etcetera……………. All this while Waterford Township continued to exist largely undisturbed right outside our gates! Mayor James Purdy supervised all this activity appointed by Town Councilmember James Fenton opposite Mr Hawthorne……….. municipal services were finally provided through private contractors starting about 1850…………….. By 1860 Waterford Township had shrunk back down to just 2 square miles behind us! By 1870 less than 10% of our original population remained……………. today no trace remains except for scattered housing developments located mostly around downtown SchenECTADY proper……………………………………………………………………………………………. From these modest beginnings many impressive achievements have been made over time culminating in our current status as ONE OF THE MOST POPULATED CITYS IN AMERICA WITH OVER 181K PEOPLE residing therein today!
