Schenectady, New York is a town in upstate New York, located on the Mohawk River. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Schenectady-Wareham-Thirteenth Judicial District. The first permanent European settler in what is now Schenectady was Nicholas Astor in 1664. He and his wife, Anne Hutchinson, founded a small trading post on an island in the Mohawk River called Beacon Hill which they named after their home town of Beacon Falls, Vermont. In 1714 Astor married Elizabeth Walden and founded another small trading post on land that he had bought from the Iroquois Confederacy for $2 million. This site became known as Albany despite its original name because George Washington visited it twice during his lifetime and both times chose Albany as his new capital city due to its strategic location within easy reach of European capitals like Philadelphia and Boston. In 1718 John Barker received a patent from King George II for 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land stretching along the north side of the river between present day Schenectady and Kingston where he built what is now known as Barker's Heights. This grant included access to alluvial fans that swept away gravels carried down by the watercourses when they flooded during heavy rains. The area now bounded by State Route 9A (now US 9A) east to Center Street south to Seneca Avenue west was also sparsely populated and undeveloped until after World War II when development began with erection of stores, schools, apartments and other buildings around central Park Avenue which ran through much of what is now downtown SchenECTADY
