Scarsdale, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It is located on the shores of Lake Ontario and lies between Rochester and Syracuse. The population was 5,702 as of the 2010 census. The town was founded by one of America's first settlers, George Washington Carleton. The area that now Scarsdale was part of what is now Central New York before it became part of Albany County in 1766. In 1814, Scarsdale became a village when it joined the towns of Plymouth and Romehill together. At that time, it had a population of 1,200 people and consisted mainly of farmers and their families living in small homes clustered around an square plazza or common yard. The first store in Scarsdale opened its doors on December 12th, 1814. A post office was established in 1815 and remained open until 1865 when it moved to Syracuse. In 1840, the first school building was erected on Main Street which served as the village hall for many years until 1955 when it burned down. In 1860, George Washington Carleton donated land for a public park which eventually became known as Carleton Park after him. Today’s portion of the park includes muchof his original land including a playground and tennis court where he played at least once every week during his lifetime A new courthouse was built in 1915-16 by local architects Henry Tompkins (1863-1932) and Elihu Root (1846-1925). It remains the only courthouse ever built entirely within a residential area in Upstate New York It is also significant because it features Ionic Revival architecture which dominates much rural architecture throughout North America at this time subsidiary structures include two churches - First Presbyterian Church (built 1906) on Broadway Drive; Second Presbyterian Church (built 1913), both located near intersections with Elmira Road/Route 22

They called this place "Havenscourt" because two large huts had been built there for storage before their arrival: one on Lot 7 ("the farm"), now within Viewport limits of Old Saybrook Village; and another near present-day Throop Road/Heineman Road which still stands today (on what was then part of Indian Camp Rd.). English settlers established themselves hereabouts during early eighteenth century via three routes: through Saybrook Colony (now Bridgeport), upstate New York into what are now Ulster County; thence downriver pastpresent-day Glens Falls into Westchester County - meeting little resistance until finally penetrating deep into thisBedfordshire region due to its ideal location between fast flowing water sources (the Hackenbush River to our north, Mohawk Creek et al.), rich agricultural soils ('below' mean high ground) with trees abounded ('above' low ground), easy access to markets ('down' river') & easy road access('up'). In 1784 Major John Scarsdale located his original home hereabouts after finding virgin land lying close by given its favorable surroundings including several good stream crossings & proximity to numerous water supplies.- From earliest days some residents likely engaged in fishing both upstream & downstream along Mohawk Creek which emptied into Hicks Bayou just south of where we stand today - https://www2australianpioneers19thcnl10000000005e3000000010000001c00000004f3e302 . As communities grew around its borders other similar names were applied such as Greenfield Landing on Captiva Bayou just east of present day Rye Brook Village boundaries; Northfork Landing opposite North Fork Public School site now occupied by South Middle School - these must have included 'Southwick', 'North Havens', etc.? By 1800 most everyone living hereabouts either engaged in agriculture or manufacturing some form of craftsmanship making their homes unique even today including many excellent examples still extant localities like midtown Yonkers today known for contemporary architecture only! Of course not all settlements formed quickly or easily but often took years/decades following initial contact & exploration prior to establishment before any tangible physical evidence can be found! .....today's residents originally constituted primarily veterans/soldiers returning home from World War I who flooded back into their old hometowns post-war thanks largely to major highway improvements engineered especiallyby Morrie Lusk Jr., then Governor DeweyDECEMBER 15th 1919 .... Many members went onto become mayors/directors general minor league baseball teams soon followed various professional sports teams.......Today's economically active community includes approximately 20 locally owned businesses yielding an estimated income ranging from $15 million-$65 million annually.....
