It is part of the Scarsdale-Bay Shore City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Scarsdale were Dutch farmers and their families who arrived from Holland in 1624. In 1814, John Fenton established a gristmill on the west side of Route 212 (now called 117th Street) which became an important flour milling center for the surrounding towns and villages. In 1837, Presbyterian minister Revs. Isaac Aspinwall and George Washington Park founded The Friends Meeting House School which remains one ofScarsdale's most important cultural institutions to this day. A railroad station was built at Scarsdale in 1853 by Trustees of the Erie Canal Company to serve as an interchange with railroads traveling southward from Buffalo and Albany through Mohawk County to Syracuse and beyond. The station served as a stop on lines running northward out of Scarsdale along with Bay Shore City and other towns until 1963 when all railway service within Scarsdal was discontinued due to Lucent Technologies' divestiture of its telecommunications business in that year. In July 1955, during racially energized protests against white flight throughout upstate New York following lunchtimegregation ordinances passed by local municipalities across the state capital region known collectively as "Nigger Days," several hundred white spectators gathered at Midway Airport just outside Scarsdale for a " peaceful demonstration" organized by black leaders including Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad against what they saw as discrimination by local police officers against African Americans attending picnics being held outdoors throughout Upstate New York celebrating national holiday Eid al-Fitr holiday marking religious diversity rather than racial segregation - an event widely seen as another step forward for civil rights progress in America during this historically segregated era It has been claimed that up to 100% or more ofScalsdales' black residents attended these picnic events taking place during 'Nigger Days,' while others have stated that there may have been only dozen or so African American participants total outnumbering hundreds or even thousands of white onlookers
