Scarsdale, New York was founded by the Erie Canal in 1825. It became a town in 1857 and was named for General John Scarsdale, who helped lead the American Revolution. The town was incorporated as a village in 1922. The population of Scarsdale reached 9,000 in 1950 and peaked at 14,500 in 1970. Today, it has a population of 3,700. The Erie Canal ran through Scarsdale from Buffalo to Albany and beyond. In 1825, the canal's builders decided to build a road parallel to the canal so that passengers could get from Buffalo to Albany quickly and easily. The road was called "Johnstown Road." The first settler in Scarsdale was Nicholas Lowenthal, who built himself a cabin on the banks of the Schuylkill River. In 1830, Captain Isaac Chauncy established an trading post at what is now known as Chauncy’s Landing on Long Island Sound. This post served as an important storehouse for goods imported by traders along the Erie Canal. By 1835, Captain Chauncy had purchased land east of his original Post at what is now known as Mud Lake Park off County Route 11A north of Interstate 90 (I-90). This area became known as Chauncy’s Swamp because it drained into an swampy creek that flowed southward from Mud Lake Park until it emptied into the Schuylkill River near present-day Bethlehem Township on Long Island.) Captain Chauncy also developed land east of Mud Lake Park which he called “Chautauqua Plain” because he hoped to attract settlers with its beautiful skies and rich soil which would produce wheat and other crops.. In 1840 Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Hand bought 10 acres southeast of current day Woodbridge Township off I-90 for $1 per acre Later that year Captain Samuel Morse donated 8 acres northwest of present day Lackawanna Boulevard between State Routes 24a and 26b west of I-490 for use as a school lot On January 25th 1850 William Halsey donated 208 feet long x 54 feet wide x 12 feet deep sod block house/mansion (now part of Brown University) at what is now Slaughter Street corner Dogpatch Road/Old Main Street intersection To commemorate this donation Halsey inscribed his name above door on sod .
