Scarsdale is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 26,864 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Scarsdale Indians who lived there before European contact. The first Europeans to visit the area were Dutch traders and fishermen in 1624. A grant of land to Capuchin friars by King Philip IV of Spain in 1686 created the village of Scarsdale on what is now the eastern edge of town. In 1795, Scarsdale's first school opened; it was also the only one in town. By 1820, however, just over half of all residents were farmers and saw little need for a school; by 1830, that number had dwindled to 6%. In 1834-35, President Andrew Jackson delivered a speech during his campaign for president entitled "An Appeal to All Americans." In it he proposed western expansion of American territory including Scarsdale and other towns along the Mohawk River. After Jackson's victory in November 1835, Congress passed an act giving Jackson new power toIndian Territory while reserving Indian land east of Missouri as part of Kansas Territory. Pacific Railroad developers built their tracks through Scarsdale starting in 1855; this led to increased demand for goods and services available from townspeople and more businesses opening up. A post office was established at Scarsdalen on July 12, 1857; it changed its name to Scarsdale on October 1st that year after receiving a gift from Mrs John Davenport (daughter of Senator James Kapp). On October 15th 1870 when New York State became Unionist statehood under Abraham Lincoln (the day following Appomattox Court), much attention was given our recently acquired lands westward beyond Missouri line due largely to fears about slavery becoming legal within Union boundaries once again – especially as neighboring states such as Indiana were voting against secession initiatives similar to those Proposition 8 would eventually pass nationwide two years later (see: Unification Crisis)). Accordingly on November 5th 1870 with Albany serving as our capital we ratified an act incorporating ourselves into “New York” becoming one municipality with 2 wards/towns viz: North & South side each represented by 3 Board members viz: Mayor/Board Member & Aldermanic Warder while Capital City served as our seat or government center which we still occupy today! Scarsdalen started off life only being used as a place where travelers could stop enroute between Kingston and Albany - nothing more! But soon enough people began coming here for business reasons too! And so what began as just another stop along the way quickly morphed into something much more... So needless to say things really got moving when word spread about this great new place called “Scarshale”! People started showing up by the thousands just for a chance glimpse at this amazing piece of real estate that some may have thought couldn’t be touched but actually WASN’T THAT GOOD TOO SHORT? HaHaaha….. Anyway back then all you could do was drive around looking at everything until you found your dream home which happened usually around 4pm or so…. hahaha……… Today if you happen upon any old homes or places that people used back then they might give you a call because chances are they still use them today 😀😃
Scarsdale was first settled in 1795 by the Scarsdales and their families. The town was named for General George Washington, who gave it to them as a gift. It grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its location at the junction of two trade routes and its close proximity to New York City. By 1892, Scarsdale had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1915, the United States Postal Service moved Scarsdale from its original post office building to a largerone on Main Street. The town quickly became an agricultural center, with corn, wheat and other crops being grown. After World War II, however, industry began to grow in Scarsdale too, thanks to its location near New York State's major airports. Today, Scarsdale is home to several large companies including HP Pavilion and Ameritech Communications Inc., as well as many smaller businesses.
