The town was first settled by Germans in 1795 and named after Scarsdale Manor on the east side of the Hocking River. The manor was destroyed in a fire in 1814 and present-day Scarsdale received its name from Captain Francis Ewing Scarsdale (1804-1868), an American colonel who served as an aide to Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. A post office called Scarsdale existed from 1814 to 1857; it was moved to Niagara Falls in 1861 and renamed Niagara Falls Station (the current name). In 1849, John Cushing opened what became known as Cushing's Millinery store on Main Street between Elm and Clinton Streets. The store continued operation until 1938 when it merged with Fenton Textile Company to form Fenton Mills Corporation In 1956, the mill closed due to economic factors and reopened as a small grocery store under the new name of Grosse Pointe Shopping Center until its closure in 1984. In 1990, Grosse Pointe Shopping Center bequeathed its entire inventory - including all but one floor of their building - to local community college students for use as collateral for a loan used for construction of nearby academic buildings at Lehman College Today, much of that inventory remains stored at Grosse Pointe Shopping Center - serving as part of the center's educational asset portfolio . Scarsdale is a small town in New York State, United States. It was founded in 1814 by settlers from the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The name comes from the Scots word "scars" meaning cuts or lacerations. According to the 2010 census, Scarsdale had a population of 77 people. The majority of residents are white, with minority populations composed of black and Hispanic residents. There are also some Asian and Latino residents in the community. The first settler in Scarsdale was John McLaren, who arrived in 1814. He built a log cabin on an area now known as McLaren Street. The first post office was established in 1816 at what is now the intersection of Main and Alice Streets. In 1825, Scarsdale became part of Albany County and changed its name to Scarsdale Township. In 1829, it became a village when it adopted a charter from Albany County Board of Elections. The first school was opened in Scarsdale on October 10, 1828 by Reverend Samuel Morse as Hudson Academy under Instruction for Boys only (it later expanded to include girls). The school closed in 1830 but reopened 9 months later as Unitarian Universalist School with instruction for both sexes which continued until 1944 when it merged into Greenburgh Union Free School District #2 In 1860-61, one acre (0 0 5 m²) were dedicated to build Cemetery which still stands today next to First Congregational Church located on Main Street north side not far from Clocktower Lane intersection where old Post Office used to be
