The name "Scarsdale" may be derived from "Scarved Rock", an abandoned quarry that still stands to this day on the border of Scarsdale and Vestal Park. The old quarry was located near present day Scarsdale High School and Scarsdale Middle School. In 1849, John Ayscough bought 560 acres (2 km²) of land north of present day Scarsdale and plans were made to build a gristmill there. However, it wasn't until 1865 when a millwright by the name of Elisha Goodrich was hired to design and build the first waterpowered flour mill in Upstate New York. During World War II, Scarsdale served as one of five evacuation points for Allied forcesDeployed throughout Western upstate New York during May 1942 through December 1944 as fighter-bombers and bombers bombed German targets including bridges over the Seneca River., churches and other military installations". According to2010 US Census data: In 2000, about 60% of residents identified themselves as Catholic; 30% Protestant; 10% Jewish; 5% Muslim or other religious affiliation; 2% have no religion at all; 1% are not sure how they identify.; .8 percent identify as 'No Religion'. This compares to Village Of Poughkeepsie's 80%. In 1990 census figures: In 2000: Catholics constituted 60%; Protestants 31%; Jews 3%; Muslims or other religious affiliation 2%; nonreligious 1%.

Scarsdale is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 8,243 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first settlement in what became Scarsdale was made by early Dutch colonists on July 16, 1624 as Jettenburght on the east bank of the Hudson River. The name derived from "scar" (a type of apple) and "sdale" (a small piece of land). On October 20, 1675, the town was named for Colonel John Scott who donated land to it. The Scott family continued to own much of the town until they sold it all to the Dutch in 1792. In 1814, Scarsdale gained city status when it merged with Haverstraw and Nahant Townships to become part of new Yonkers Township. In 1846, Scarsdale became an incorporated village and again lost city status when it merged with Ossining into that township's new Village Board seat in 1898; however, this merger never took place because Ossining voted against incorporation twice during those years. During World War II Scarsdale served as a training camp for troops from upstate New York and Quebec Canada who were used in various combat roles including infantry infantrydarling tank units; armor units; naval aviators; military police officers; ambulance drivers; night-fighters pilots; construction battalion members ; etc.; many serving overseas until their discharge or death at home during 1945-1946. Many homes still remain standing from these early days post-war: Captain's House #1 (built 1934), Driscoll Mansion #2 ( Built 1935), Scott Mansion #3 (Built 1938), Montague Place #4 ( built 1951 ), North Water Street/South Water Street house(s)#5-7( built 1957-1960 ), South Water Street house(s)#8( built 1961 ). During WWII there also was a large factory complex which produced munitions such as tanks and guns near what is now Braddock Avenue near where today's Diaper Drive meets I-87 exit 10A . This complex has been razed but some remnants remain such as a large concrete bunker still visible today called Project Gunsight which may have been used for target practice during WW2
