Ira had come down from Pennsylvania with some of the families that had accompanied General George Washington when he crossed the Delaware River into Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. With only $5 for each person they brought along (the equivalent of about $100 today), these hardy pioneer settlers were able to weather harsh winters near Philadelphia before reaching their new home near Canandaigua Lake on November 6teenth of that year where they built a cabin called Prospect Hill House according to one account ().
