The population was 5,604 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Scarsdale were Dutch traders in 1624. They named the area "Hagaard" after one of their leaders, Hendrick Hagaart. In 1764, General George Washington passed through the area on his way from Albany to Morristown and called the village "Schaefer's Valley". In 1814, Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt built a steamboat dock here and began shipping goods from Staten Island to New York City. The town started to grow rapidly when he opened a school in 1826 and built a courthouse in 1830. In 1848, John D'Angelo founded what would become Oneonta (now Oneida) County as part of his larger effort to create rifle-bearing white farmers across Upstate America. To support this new development, D'Angelo donated 2 million acres (8 km²) of land around Scarsdale including what is now Oneonta County Agricultural Park. In 1870, he merged with other localities forming Scarsdale Township which continued to grow until it reached its present size of 6 square miles (15 km²). During World War II, Scarsdale was home to many military personnel who lived or worked nearby during the war innings at Fort Drum and gunnery ranges located near Red Hook Bay Naval Air Station on Long Island Sound. After the war ended and most personnel returned home, the population decreased slowly until it peaked at 7,000 in 1970 before declining again over the next few decades until reaching 5,604 at the 2010 census
The town of Scarsdale was founded in 1811 by John Scarsdale and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Erie Canal and its close proximity to New York City. In 1824, the town passed a law allowing for women to own land. In 1869, Scarsdale became one of the first towns in New York State to become racially segregated.
