Scarsdale, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 12,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The name of the town originated from the Scarsdale Estate on Long Island which was sold to farmers in 1792 by Sir George Clinton. The present day village of Scarsdale first appeared on maps in 1683 as "Scarstown". In 1792, gentleman farmer James Hetherington bought the estate from Sir George Clinton and renamed it Scarsdale after himself and his family. Over time, other families also acquired parcels of land in what is now Scarsdale Village. By 1851, most of what is now Scarsdale had been developed with small single-family homes and stores clustered around School Street and Church Street. In 1922, when Rockland County was formed from part of Westchester County, Scarsdale became part of that county's new district; however its zoning remained unchanged until it changed again in 1961 when it was placed within the new Borough of Yonkers. At that time it became an unincorporated community governed by a board appointed by the borough president as well as by elected officials including a fire commissioner and police chief who could be removed without cause for any reason including nonpayment of taxes or refusal to take bribes from developers or politicians. During World War II many people took up arms against Nazi Germany living either within or adjacent to rural areas; these individuals were known as " resistance fighters ". One such individual who fought alongside US troops during World War II was scion Arthur Ashe Sr., son of tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr.. In 1948Scarsdale opened its first post office which served residents until 1955 when mail service was transferred to Yonkers due to increased postal availability during wartime because Manhattan had been bombed so heavily Allied forces had established a series of airfields throughout NY providing supplies and shelter for thousands Of people while also allowing military aircraft access to targets deep inside German territory
