Scarsdale, New York is a village located in Westchester County, New York. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The Village of Scarsdale was first settled in 1794 by Joshua Day and his family. They named their settlement after Sir George Scrope, 3rd Baronet who had bought land in what is now Scarsdale from the Dutch in 1624. From this name derived the day Saturday which became known as "Joshua Day's Saturday." In 1874, Battle Creek—later Prospect Heights—was annexed to Scarsdale and its residents were transferred to Battle Creek Borough. In 1916, when Prospect Heights was annexed to Valhalla Village it also merged with Scarsdale and all inhabitants thenceforward are considered part of that village. The village motto is "Nihil Obstat," meaning "nothing on my soul." The Village Board adopted a resolution dated October 9th, 1922 reaffirming this motto and expressing appreciation for all support given by the community over its many years. Scarsdale, New York is a small town located in the Mohawk Valley of upstate New York. The population was 9,445 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scarsdale-Middletown, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Scarsdale goes back to 1785 when Ebenezer Post and his family bought land from the Indians and began farming it. In 1827, Post sold his holdings to John Denton who organized what became the Village of Scarsdale. In 1868, James Buchanan, President of the United States sent Surveyor General Edward Everett Mifflin with a plan to create townships in upstate New York. Mifflin recommended that Scarsdale be included in this effort and on March 12th 1870, voters approved incorporation into the village of Scarsdale which consisted of 5 square miles with a population of 146 people. The first post office was opened in 1871 and remained open until 1922. The current post office building was built in 1923 and serves as the town's headquarters today. The first school was opened in 1865 and served grades 1-8 until 1916 when it was replaced by a high school which still operates today under the name "Scarsdale High School". In 1903-1904, local developer Charles Fenton constructed what is now known as "The Fenton House", an elaborate mansion which he used as a summer home for many years. With its white marble floors and cream walls, it resembled something out of an English gentleman's library;today it is preserved as part of The Fenton House Museum within walking distance from downtown Scarsdale. Though not commonly considered agricultural or rural communities by modern standards (Scarsdale has only 2 grocery stores), its residents have long been involved in farming activities such as raising chickens and cattle, growing vegetables for sale or storing produce on their properties for winter storage; these days there are also several small businesses based in town that provide essential services such as plumbing AND engineering! There are currently no plans to develop any areas outside town limits but future growth could include housing opportunities for those looking to move closer to work or shopping centers located near major highways!
