Scarsdale is a small town in upstate New York, located about 25 miles southeast of Buffalo. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Niagara County. The name comes from the Dutch word "scars" meaning cuts or wounds, and "dale" meaning path or journey. The first Europeans to visit what is now Scarsdale were French traders in 1614 when they passed through the area on their way from Canada to Albany. In 1847, farmers in this area formed the Local Board of Education which provided public education for all children in these rural areas without private schools. The first post office opened in Scarsdale on March 14,1853; it continued operation until 1886 under various names including Clintonville and Rushville (replaced by present-day Rochester). A fire destroyed most of the buildings throughout town on December 7th, 1871; however, some stores and businesses reopened shortly afterward. The Erie Canal connected Buffalo to Lake Ontario via Scarsdale and other townships before reaching its mouth at Canandaigua Bay northeast of Syracuse in 1825. AfterNOON Tuesday September 15th 1830 Indian Chiefs William Lyon Mackenzie and his followers attacked three white men traveling through this regionous country southwest of Onondaga County Bridge; one man died as a result of this attack known as Jackknife Massacre according to United States history books maps available online7 Although written reports claiming different causes exist more research is needed to determine definitively who committed this act8 it can be assumed that American Indians were involved as there were numerous such incidents during this time period across North America 10 In 1861 when NY Central Railroad arrived here new Depot #1 & 2 were built just east off main street near current high school building [now community center]. This Depot served as Headquarters for all Train Operations here local & eastern New York State lines being hauled by locomotives over Main Street bridge into Onondaga Co.,NY thru out Western PA coming into NY City Limits after crossing Steel Road over Hennepin River
