The name "Saratoga" comes from nearby Schoharie Lake and its falls. The first Europeans to visit Saratoga were Dutch traders in 1614-1615, who named it after their home region of Holland: Zandvoort (Zandvoort Falls). In 1764, British troops burned down part of the Mohawk village near present day Saratoga Springs so that the Indian Chief Uncas could not trade with them; this event is known as "The burning of Saratoga". In 1777, during America's Revolutionary War, Lieutenant Colonel George Washington's force besieged Fort Schuyler on the southern tip of Manhattan Island for two weeks before withdrawing. Major General Jameson Magruder led an American army against Washington at White Plains on October 14th & 15th 1777 which resulted in a major victory when they forced his retreat and captured most of his army while they were away. In 1814-1815 Major General James Hennepin's brigade attacked militia forces under Brigadier General John Stark at Cold Spring Ford outside present day Rome but was repulsed with heavy losses; this event is also known as "the battle of Cold Spring Ford". On February 12th 1825 Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a line between Albany and Buffalo using land grants given by Prince George Augustus II to Various landowners in what became Erie Canal Company territory; this act is also known as the Erie Canal Act. In 1837-1838 Governor Jonathan Edwards convened a meeting to discuss plans for enlarging Albany because there had been an increase in migration from western New York into Albany due to opportunities opened up by railroads. A group composed largelyof farmers/manufacturers gathered around Reverend Elijah Hicks to discuss ways to improve transportation between Albany and Buffalo through building canals; this group later became known as Friends Meeting House or simply Friends Meeting House. This group developed into what we now know as Watertown Planning Board which met monthly until 1840 when meetings were moved to rented space on Church Street due to lack of available meeting hall space within city limits – still today Watertown has one meeting per month! On December 6th 1846 De Witt Clinton announced he would run for President on term Limits rather than seek reelection which caused excitement throughout Upstate NY due to fear he would be reelected without running again since termlimits only gave him 3 years instead of 4 years like many other politicians had received prior! After much debate among friends he decided not run but agreed not speak out publicly about it any longer
