Saratoga Springs, New York is a city located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It is home to the Saratoga Rifle and Pistol Club, one of the oldest rifle clubs in the United States. The club was founded on May 10, 1853, by members of the Second Presbyterian Church in Saratoga Springs. The current building was designed by Neely and Healy and built between 1909 and 1912. The club's first rifle stock was a piece of oak that had been cut down from a tree near where it now stands. It was used for target practice before being donated to the club. In 1864, a new rifle stock was purchased from Philadelphia Arms Company. This stock had been made for use with muskets but proved too heavy for rifles. It was eventually replaced by an improved version that became known as the "Saratoga Rifle Stock." In 1905, members of the club voted to adopt a unique type of rifle stock called a "Cavalry Carbine Stock." Thisstock featured an extended magazine well that allowed handguns to be carried attachments such as revolvers or shotguns without having to remove them from their rifles. The Cavalry CarbineStock remained in use until 1933 when it was replaced by an improved design known as the "Polearm Carbine Stock." The present day Saratoga Rifle and Pistol Club began meeting on October 26th, 1915 at 5 PM in what is now called Old Main Building on Park Row in downtown Saratoga Springs ( adjacent to Chautauqua Hall). That same year sawthe first match held at Saratoga Springs Gun Show with sixty-five shooters taking part including George Armstrong Custer who won two pistols matches against James Aitkin ( rated ]) . In 1917 , Arnie Mosser took over management of SARPC while also serving as President pro tempore; Mosser would remain headmaster until his death in 1954
