Butler established a military post called Fort George on Ossian Hill within present-day downtown Saratoga Springs. The fort served as a base of operations for Butler's Indian Expedition against the Iroquois Confederacy during the 1840s and 1850s. It also housed artillery batteries used to bombard Kingston Heights near Buffalo Niagara Airport during World War II; these batteries were destroyed by Allied forces in 1945 before they could be used against Japan. In 1865, local businessman Augustus Kelley donated 350 acres (1 km²) of land east of what is now Main Street to build what would become Lake Placid amusement park; it opened in 1870 as one of America’s first theme parks with games like ice skaters and roller coasters based on European models dating back to those days when Europe had no experience with large scale amusement park development! The opening attracted such celebrities as James Cagney and Edward Gwynne as well as hundreds of everyday people who came to enjoy skiing, skating and swimming at one of North America’s most popular tourist destinations – right up until its closure during World War II due to wartime public safety concerns! Today only a few foundations remain from that original park including an old railway spur which leads into today’s intersection between Main Street and Elysian Avenue – still providing access for locals who love going tubing or fishing both inside and outside city limits!
