Accordingly, on February 14th 1814 Congress created the District of Columbia out of land formerly belonging to Maryland and Virginia which had been taken away during that war for military purposes only! On March 3rd 1814 issues paper money called "dollars" became legal tender throughout most of America! This was an event which served as a turning point in American history! For years afterwards Americans used Spanish dollars which were still legal tender in that country! When America entered World War I on April 6th 1917 she adopted World War I Era Naval Ensigns known as "Saratoga Stars". On July 1st 1922 New York Statehood was granted to her!!! On September 26th 1870 Union Pacific Railroad completed its line from Albany westward through Saratoga Springs Junction where it connected withthe Erie Canal at Troy so that goods could be shipped southward directly from Buffalo down the canal! This made Sarataga Springs one ofAmerica's busiest rail centers! Merchants started selling provisions and hardware here while farmers grew crops such as corn, potatoes and nuts; later other products such as fruits and vegetables were added along with apparel making this center into one ofthe leading commercial districts in North America during this period!! As railroad travel increased freight traffic arrived via truck or buses which Accounted for 50% or moreofthe total traffic passing through town between 1940 & 1970!!! Today several shopping malls dot the landscape surrounding downtown while numerous high tech businesses are locateeing around Interstate 880
