The first Europeans to visit Saratoga Springs were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his Pembroke group on July 14, 1524. They named it "Saratoga" after their home island of Sardinia. The Dutch explorer Hendrick Hudson explored nearby Lake George in 1609-10 and named it "Hudson's Lakes" after him. Englishman John Montresor visited in 1664 and called it "Monterey". The United States opened its borders with Canada in 1816 when President James K. Polk signed the Treaty of Ghent which ended the war between America and Great Britain. The area around present-day Saratoga Springs was part of Canada until 1898 when it became part of New York State as a result of the Adirondack Park Act of 1821. In 1847, Congress created a new county for upstate New York called Ontario (later Erie) County based on present-day Albany – then part of Albany – and portions of Buffalo, Rochester, Oneida and Warren counties. On May 1st, 1848, Saratoga Springs was incorporated as a village within this new county having a population of 3371 residents including 814 farmers who raised hay or corn on their estates while also manufacturing items such as hats or shoes from local sawmills or potters' workshops (the town had no mills until1892). In 1850s there were 2 churches: one Congregationalist (later Episcopal) built by Reverend Ebenezer Richardson in 1830; another Presbyterianbuilt by Rev Elisha Doolittle in 1860 but destroyed by fire in 1862; both now gone but replaced with modern worship buildings over time In 1861 John Ladd founded what would become Nubian Brewery followed by Ladd & Son cigars later becoming Anheuser Busch In 1865 he started bottling beer for delivery into areas like Syracuse NY so that people wouldn't have to go far downriver to get beer A major event that took place here was World’s Fair held here from October 9th through November 5th 1893 which showcased many different types of industry Some famous visitors during this time include: Theodore Roosevelt who rode his horse “Teddy” all around the fairgrounds; Booker T Washington who gave speeches at various venues inside/outside the fairgrounds; Mary Baker Eddy who gave presentations about her Christian Science beliefs at several locations including an open air auditorium near where today's NY State Capitol stands; Alice Paul who cofounded the Congressional Union Party along with Nathan Beale she also traveled across country giving speeches about this party before disbanding it soon afterwards This event also helped bring attention back to Upstate NY which had been largely ignored since prior attempts at exploitation failed Overnight accommodations for workers Turnpike construction crews continued throughout all these years making travel possible between Saratogaspring&wayland only beginningin1905 With advances in transportation we can now enjoy day trips visitor center open every day except Wednesdays Open 10am - 4pm Admission free Historical displays available every hour starting at 7pm Historic restaurant still operating closed Mondays Closed Tuesdays Restroom open till midnight Alcohol allowed during historical periods Please check website for updates
