Saratoga Springs (population: 97,000) is a community in Upstate New York located on the southern edge of the Saratoga County town of Ithaca. The name may derive from the Mohawk word saratoga meaning "a place where there are trees" or "a meadow". In 1777, General George Washington and his army reached Saratoga Springs during their campaign against British forces in what was then known as the Saratoga Expedition. The first white settler in Saratoga Springs was Nicholas Frick who arrived in 1814. He built a sawmill on the east side of Main Street and named it after himself, Frick's Mill. In 1825, John Atherton purchased land at the intersection of Main and Pine Streets from Nicholas Frick. He named it after his brother-in-law Aaron Burr, who had been U.S. Vice President under James K. Polk when that nation became involved inthe Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1849, Cyrus Sibley erected a frame house at 524 Main Street which he called Home Place; he also donated land for a Methodist church and cemetery on Front Street near today's State Capitol building. One year later, John Witherspoon bought 400 acres north of Main Street from Cyrus Sibley for $10 per acre and began to build what is now known as Witherspoon Manor - one of four manors developed by Witherspoon around this time including Riverbend Manor on Seneca Lake (now part of Albany), Poughkeepsie Manor east of Kingston and Westchester Manor northeast of Schenectady City limits).
