Saratoga Springs, New York is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community dates back to 1792 when it was called Westmoreland and became Saratoga Springs on April 12, 1814 after the Battle of Saratoga which ended British General John Burgoyne's siege of Valley Forge. On July 11, 1825, Saratoga Springs incorporated as a village and remained so until 1917 when it became an independent borough. In 1990-1991 Saratoga Springs voters approved a plan to change its name to "Saratoga" because of its location in upstate New York and historical ties to the battle site. The springs that now provide water for Saratoga Springs were first discovered by Europeans in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano who named them Acqua di Ponto or "Water of Keyes". A plaque on the former carriage house in downtown tells the story: "On September 3rd 1675 Captain George Monckton found oil near this place while sailing from Albany to Kingston; he took some samples and sent them back with his ship to England where they were analyzed by Sir Andrew Johnston (1666-1737) who pronounced them equal to those at Jersey." It wasn't until 1792 that Westmoreland got its name from its location within Valley Forge National Park - next door to what is now known as American Museum of Natural History - although at that time it was just another small farming village along Hempstead Creek. That year, Union troops under Brigadier General Nathanael Greene stormed Valley Forge after a two-month siege and relieved their besieged comrades at Westmoreland Heights overlooking the capital city of Philadelphia. Two weeks later on April 12th Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Thacher attacked again against entrenched British forces near Aqueduct Hill but lost 13 men killed including 2nd Lt George Washington Carver before capturing 5 officers and 100 enlisted men including Captains Samuel Chasepole (1572-1650), John Armstrong (1720-1789), Robert Thomson (1728-1800) and Gideon Welles (1729-1801). Saratoga Springs, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Saratoga-Onondaga County, New York metropolitan area. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "spring of happiness." The first Europeans to visit Saratoga were Dutchmen and their Indian guides in 1624. The next year, Englishman John Montresor traveled through the area on his way to Albany and discovered a natural spring near present-day Saratoga Lake. He named it after his home country, England. In 1795, General George Washington explored the region while on his trip from Philadelphia to points north. On July 4th of that year, he made landfall at what is now called Battery Park City and founded Mount Vernon as a showcase for American power and democracy. In 1814, General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in Saratoga Springs with his army during the American Civil War and used it as a base for operations against Confederate forces in Virginia. Today, Saratoga Springs remains an important center for culture and tourism in Upstate New York. Its attractions include five golf courses (the most famous being Arnold Palmer's), two hospitals (Oneida Memorial Hospital and Stony Brook University Medical School), four museums (the Museum of Fine Arts; the National Gallery of Art; and the Hirshhorn Museum) as well as over 50 restaurants including several Michelin starred establishments. There are also numerous cultural events held throughout the year including classical music concerts; dance performances by local schools; opera productions; family fun days like pumpkin pickin' or hayrides; arts shows such as Shakespeare's Globe production or illusionist shows like Tom Sawyer's Life on Wheels; etc., making it one of New York's top tourist destinations

The town was first settled by New York colonists in 1777, and it played an important role in the American Revolution. After the war, Saratoga Springs grew rapidly as a result of its position as a crossroads for transportation and trade. In 1814, President James K. Polk named Saratoga Springs one of the original 10 U.S. Military Reserves, which helped keep America's troops stationed at home during the war time period. In 1886, Saratoga Springs hosted the International Exhibition of Arts and Crafts, which drew attention to local artisans and their products. The exposition also served as a turning point for Saratoga Springs into an international tourist attraction.
