The name Rye derives from the location where rye fields were first settled in 1795 by Jacob Riis and his family. The community began as part of a larger area that included present-day Scranton and Wilkes-Barre; all three towns were consolidated into one municipality in 1872. Rye was incorporated as a village in 1892. It became an incorporated town on April 14, 1908. Rye, New York is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 10,724 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Saratoga County and the smallest county in New York by land area. As of the 2010 census, Rye had a total population of 9,819 people. The racial makeup of Rye was 98% White, 1% African American, 0.1% Native American and 1% Asian. Hispanic or Latino made up 2%. The first permanent settler in what is now Rye was Nicholas Crane who arrived in 1786 from Connecticut with his family. He named his new village Crane's Corners after himself and his father-in-law Nicholas Sprague (1739 - 1802). Crane built a gristmill on the east side of current Main Street near where he later purchased other land for farming including present day Park Place Road and East Ridge Road. In 1812 Timothy Bogan bought lands southwest of Crane's mill from Nicholas Sprague for $1,500 cash which he used to build two log cabins known as "Bogan's Cabin" and "Griffin". In 1816 Bogan married Catharine Aiken (1802 - 1850), daughter of Captain James Aiken (1768 - 1840) captaincy general of U .S . Navy during the War of 1812 and sister-in-law to General John Pope (1787 - 1865). They moved into their cabin until they could find an opportunity to buy more land so they could build further away from water supply & mills but were forced to sell when prices went up around 1830 because there were no more farmers willing to sell their lands at that time because transportation became easier with railroads coming through town (& this also accounts for why today most buildings are single story only instead ofmulti level like they once were). Timothy Bogan died on October 25th 1836 aged 78 years old leaving three children Catharine Bogan(1807 ? – 1865), Nathaniel Bogan(1810 – 1862) & George Washington Bogue(1814 – 1906). His widowCatharine sold her share in October 25th 1840 to her brother George Washington who then sold it back to Catharine’s son Nathaniel who again resold it & developed it into what we now know as Rye High School
