In 1951, Eastman Kodak began raspberry red taping of film to create histograms in their Rochester studio using Reynoldson Cameras (the first digital camera!). This helped popularize photography in America and has been credited with helping give Rice University its name! Today, Rye is home to many interesting cultural attractions such as The Alchemists Museum of Glass Art and Tea Leaf District. Rye is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-on-Hudson, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in Rye were the Dutch who arrived from Amsterdam in 1614 and started a new trading post on the west side of the Mohawk River. John Winthrop (1630-1715), an American Puritan missionary and Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, founded West Point Academy in 1686 on land which he purchase from the Sycamore family.In 1712, John Dickinson began to grow rye for food for his own farm and also exported it to England as a flour supplier. In 1806, Commodore James Ross sailed upriver from Kingston upon Hull with his squadron of three ships to demand tribute from the Iroquois Nations under their chiefs Cornetto and DeWitt Clinton. By this time only about 350 people remained in Rye; but by 1840 its population had increased to 6,000 residents. Rye's rich history can be traced back to when it was part of Albany Township where sterling gold was mined until 1830 when it became part of Onondaga County due to its location between Albany and Syracuse City limits. The first mill in Rye gristled along with other early mills located around what is now Main Street; but unfortunately these mills never prospered because of competition from larger mills located further away such as Oneonta (then called Rockland) or Peekskill (then known as Schoharie). A group of businessmen led by Nicholas Cooke purchaseding several abandoned gristmills within walking distance of Main Street around 1822; they renovated them into two large woolen manufacturers known as The Woolen Mill Company & spinning house No 2 & 3 together with other businesses including Dyers’ Block Store on Park Row which still stands today - one half block east along Park Row opposite current day Elmira Mall The Cooke brothers also built a log cabin known as Honeysuckle House which still stands today on lot number 7 south side alley just southwest corner Court Avenue between present day Elmira Boulevard and State Route 519 This small cabin served as their home until their death circa 1850 leaving behind many descendants that continue living there today including former Congressman George Fenton Jr., who resided there during World War II Honeysuckle House has since been donated by descendants to local historical society where it will serve as an exhibit

Rye, New York is a town in upstate New York. The population was 6,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1797 by Loyalists from Rhode Island as a refuge for their families during the American Revolution. In 1824, it became one of the two towns in Erie County when that county was created from parts of Ontario and Niagara counties. Rye's growth came from its location on the Mohawk River—now part of Buffalo—and its access to good farmland and markets. The rise of industry in the late 19th century caused many businesses to relocate to other towns around Erie County, but Rye continued to grow thanks to its strong economy and community spirit. The current incarnation of Rye began as an agricultural community located along the south bank of the Mohawk River between Canandaigua and Auburn Mills Roads. The first permanent settler arrived in 1797, when Loyalist refugees who had sided with Great Britain moved into what is now Rye from Rhode Island after they were betrayed by their British counterparts. They named their new home "Rye" after General John Forbes's command post on Long Island during the Siege of Fort George (1776). Over time, many other families followed suit and built homes near where they remained until 1840 when all land east of Canandaigua Road was annexed into Rochester Township due to advances in transportation technology which made goods more accessible statewide. By 1860, there were only a few scattered farms left standing within present-day Rye; however, it had grown so large enough that it formed its own incorporated village called "Rye". The arrival of trains led to increased commercial activity throughout much upstate New York during this time period and enabled farmers to sell goods not only locally but also at larger markets across northeastern Pennsylvania and Ohio. This ledRYe merchants such as Nathan Hays & Co., Jno Blythe & Sons Shoesmiths (later Hays Bros.), Wm Maynard’s grocery store (later Dutch Bros.), Edward Denny’s barbershop (later Harry Denny), Fenton Masons ( later Demarest Masons), Aiken Brownell “Brewster” Fine Furniture ( later Fine Furniture Mart), Jacob Riis & Co., Piggott Brothers Grain Merchants Inc., John Pemberton Heckscher Clothing Company and others establish themselves within what is now known as rye society or business district which extended almost unto Elmira Road/Canandaigua Lake both northward towards Jefferson Street westward towards Main Street while still keeping close touch with older villages like Auburn Mills on Oneida Creek just upstream from present day downtown.. On July 1st 1884 rye society merged with Auburn Mills Village forming one future entity - Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area
