The first gun target in Rye, New York was fired on January 14th, 1795 by Captain John Smith of the British forces during the Battle of Saratoga.
Rye is a small town in upstate New York, located on the east bank of the Hudson River. It lies approximately six miles northeast of downtown New York City and seventeen miles north of Albany. In 2010, Rye had a population of 6,833. The earliest known inhabitants were Native Americans who lived here for centuries before Removal from their land in 1755. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Rye was made by Dutch colonists in 1624. The name "Rye" was given to the community by Captain John Rye during his expedition downriver from Kingston upon Hull to establish a trade post at this location. The first settler in what is now Rye was Nicholas van den Bergh, who arrived there with his family in 1627. He built a cabin on the present site of First Presbyterian Church and named it "Rye." He also erected a mill which still stands today as one of the most significant historical landmarks in town. In 18th century life here revolved around agriculture and trade with other parts of New Netherland and Europe; Although rye flour was an important part of colonial cuisine, it did not reach great heights until after the Revolution when grain prices plummeted due to restrictions placed on importing British goods into America via import quotas put into place by Great Britain following its victory over France at Saratoga Field (July 14, 1775). At that time many farmers turned to rye as their primary source for food because it had low levels of gluten –a protein found only rarely among cereal grains- making it ideal for baking bread and pasta dishes without adding salt or sugar which were then common ingredients in Colonial American cuisine. Although much has changed since those early days (the last resident passed away in 2006), some things have not: One remains Manhattan's only Farmers' Market; live music takes place regularly outdoors at local pubs including the Ferry Building Tavern where locals gather each late summer night for tunes contributed by local bands; several prominent establishments remain open year-round like Shoprite Market & Bakery which continues to serve fresh produce daily since 1886; Rye's renowned Catskill Mountains views are available through drives along Route 919 leading out towards them from town center

By 1830, Rye had become one of the most important wheat-producing towns in New York State. After World War II, however, rye production dwindled as a result of changes in farming methods and technological advances that made other crops more profitable. Today, Rye remains an important agricultural community with a strong history attached to it
