Rye is a town in York County, New York, United States. The population was 5,509 at the 2010 census. Rye was founded by farmers and their families in 1784 as a small settlement on the south side of the Susquehanna River. The town developed rapidly due to its location on an agricultural and shipping hub, and by 1830 it had a population of 9,000 people. It became part of New York City in 1898. The first settlers were farmers who came from England. They built log cabins while they awaited land grants that would allow them to settle in America. The grant process took many years because there were many applicants. In 1784, four men from London – John Graham, George Washington Goodwin III, James Webb and Nicholas Nicholson – applied for land on the east side of the Susquehanna River near modern-day Rye Borough. They received a grant of 640 acres (2 km²). In 1828, rye farmer Peter Van Valkenburgh donated 1 acre (40 m²) to the Town of Rye for use as a public square. That same year, rye councillor Samuel Fenton erected a wooden plaque to commemorate the donation with these words: "This ground was donated by Peter Van Valkenburgh in memory of his late wife." In 1835, when NYS created its first township system following British colonial policy dictating that towns should be named after adjacent counties or river valleys instead of individual landowners or individuals – including some who had contributed nothing to society – Rye was chosen as one of five towns within NYS' new entity called Ulster County (predecessor to Kings County). This gave Rye municipal status rather than just rural postal service aligning with nearby Ulstertown which had been designated as such only six months earlier without any input from residents or businesses therein! On July 24th 1861 during its third session under Governor Andrew Johnson),the Legislature passed an act establishing the city limits for what would become known asNew York City; this act also transferred all property northward along Broadway between 23rd Street and 34th Street into NYC's newly created barriere district; giving rise to what is now Herald Square! At 2 am on November 15th 1865 Union soldier Nathan Hale fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln while he slept in his bed at 4 Union barracks located equidistant across 6 blocks NW corner 3rd Ave & E Streets NW - thus becoming one half mile away from White House thereby fulfilling prophecy uttered by Elijah Parish Jr., founder member & treasurer Brooklyn Heights Masonic Lodge No 571
The first Passaic County, New York town was formed in 1724 from the merger of Monmouth and Cumberland Counties. In 1778, Rensselaer, Albany, and Schenectady were consolidated into one new county with the same name. The last change to the name came in 1831 when Livingston County was created.
